The Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences (HNFAS) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) invites applicants for a tenure track position in livestock at the Assistant Extension Agent level beginning approximately June 1, 2024.

The department seeks candidates whose service is centered on cooperative extension education and outreach for livestock and poultry production in Maui County. Candidates with multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary experience in large and small animal production are encouraged to apply. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students, industry and government stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, based in the County of Maui, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates among different demographics.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) is an indigenous-serving institution with a commitment to becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. The University of Hawaii at Manoa is classified as an "R1" institution; part of a 10-campus statewide system that has 48,373 students enrolled (Fall 2022), and it is a uniquely structured Minority Serving Institute (MSI) and Land Grant University (LGU) within the US Western-Pacific region. UH is one of a few M.I-LGUs offering Associate, Baccalaureate, Masters, and Ph.D. STEM degrees, as well as post-graduate certificates.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. To provide leadership in extension education and outreach programming to assist existing and potential livestock producers of cattle, swine, small ruminants, and poultry in Maui County. Emphasis will be on beef cattle, range and pasture production and management, swine and small ruminants (sheep, goats). Responsibilities may also include bison and poultry.
  2. Develop multi-disciplinary, collaborative partnerships with Maui County and other CTAHR faculty, government/community agencies, livestock associations, and stakeholder groups.
  3. Collaborate with other agents, specialists, and researchers to develop and conduct applied research and extension outreach programs and projects, transfer research-based information and technology to stakeholders, and foster and enhance the livestock industries, including small livestock operations.
  4. Develop extension education programming that uses a variety of teaching methods and tools such as social media resources, distance education technology, as well as traditional field day programs and workshops for stakeholders to foster and enhance the livestock industries.
  5. Advise and be responsible for the 4-H/Youth Livestock projects, clubs, volunteers, and local fair board within Maui County, individually and in collaboration with other 4-H/Youth development faculty.
  6. Support and provide Livestock Quality Assurance training to adult and youth audiences.
  7. Seek, obtain, and manage external funding sources to support programming efforts, including grants and contracts, and practice cost recovery.
  8. Conduct scholarly and extension activities at the county, state, and national levels.
  9. Participate in county, department, college, and university service/governance.
  10. Work with stakeholders and attend meetings that may occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at off-site locations.
Junior Extension Agent Minimum Qualifications
  1. A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in animal science, range management, or a related field.
  2. Ability to exercise independent judgment and assume responsibility for developing a collaborative extension program that applies Extension teaching methods.
  3. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai'i Driver's License (Class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation that meets position needs.
Assistant Extension Agent Minimum Qualifications
  1. A Master's degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in animal science, range management, or a related field, or, in addition to the Bachelor's degree, 30 credit hours of post-baccalaureate academic work in a field appropriate to the position.
  2. At least three years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work or equivalent in a closely related field.
  3. Ability to exercise independent judgment and to assume responsibility for developing a collaborative extension program that applies Extension teaching methods.
  4. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai'i Driver's License (Class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation that meets position needs.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional and modern educational methods and tools, i.e. computer-word processing, database management, desktop publishing, web meetings, social networking platforms.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to working with diverse stakeholders and historically underserved or under resourced populations.
  3. Demonstrated evidence of scholarly activities, including but not limited to peer-reviewed manuscript and extension publications.
  4. Experience with grant-writing and obtaining additional sources of programmatic support.
