Advocate Aurora is Hiring a Nuclear Medicine Technologist Near Palos Heights, IL

Major Responsibilities:

  • Technologist is responsible for accurately performing defined diagnostic procedures as requested by referring physicians, in a timely manner.
    • 1)Confirms appropriateness of exam.
    • 2)Explains procedures to patient.
    • 3)Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals and procedural adjunctive medication by proper route per clinician prescription and according to approved exam parameters. Competently performs venipuncture and placement of peripheral IV catheters for medication administration. Accesses other vascular access devices, as determined by department training and need. Follows correct procedures for handling radioactive materials. Understands and implements ALARA measures. Maintains accurate records of pharmaceutical doses.
    • 4)Obtains relevant patient history.
    • 5)Prepares the patient for exam.
    • 6)Operates digital imaging systems to acquire images and/or graphic data.
  • Maintains a safe, organized and efficient work environment.
    • 1)Complies with established radiation safety standards, OSHA safety standards and IDNS regulations.
    • 2)Controls exposure from radioactive sources by using appropriate shielding and storing materials in a controlled area with limited access.
    • 3)Maintains department orderliness and cleanliness per regulations and infection control policies.
    • 4)Assesses patient’s condition and implements appropriate patient care guidelines and procedures.
    • 5)Report inventory depletion to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintains complete record of receipt, disposition and disposal of all radioactive materials as indicated by the Department of Nuclear Safety and Accrediting Organization:
    • 1)Logs all inventory upon receipt.
    • 2)Dispenses doses, recording the amount administered, time and patient.
    • 3)Records disposal of spent doses and returns to vendor.
    • 4)Records disposition of radioactive waste material.
  • Performs clerical duties required to capture charges, maintain required recordkeeping and facilitates physician reporting
    • 1)Makes the appropriate entries into the designated system to ensure charges are accurate
  • Development and ongoing maintenance of collaborative relationships with department staff, physicians, and related external contacts in order to meet departmental objectives.
    • 1)Communicates with nurses to ensure appropriate patient preparation is achieved
    • 2)Develops and maintains relationships with physicians as well as other associates.
    • 3)Notifies other areas that maybe affected by changes in existing services or implementation of new services in order that appropriate planning for the services are accomplished.
    • 4)Responsible for contacting patients to confirm and review prep for upcoming studies including obtaining relevant medical and surgical history.
    • 5)Obtain documentation for Infusaport use and sedation as requested by patient and obtaining radiologist signature.
  • Maintains equipment and examination rooms.
    • 1)Ensures proper use of equipment and notifies the Practice Manager of equipment malfunctions.
    • 2)Performs quality controls as indicated by the IDNS, maintaining a current record on calibration of the dose calibrator, imaging equipment, counting equipment and gamma survey meters.
  • Maintains professional competence by attending inservice presentations, staff meetings and outside continuing education programs appropriate to the needs and goals of the department.
    • 1)Documents continuing education credits necessary for maintenance of license.
    • 2)Attends 80% of all scheduled staff meetings.

Education/Experience Required:

  • • Graduate of an accredited 2-year Nuclear Medicine Program. • Two plus years experience in Nuclear Medicine. *This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups treated, i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various groups is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • • Knowledge of nature of radioactivity rules and regulations dictating the use and handling thereof. • Ability to perform with direct supervision. • Ability to operate radiation detection equipment with direct supervision. • Ability to use computers and a variety of computer programs to perform procedures, record disposition of radiopharmaceuticals, schedule patients and capture charges. • Good interpersonal skills. • Good customer relations.
  • • IDNS Licensed Nuclear Medicine Technologist. • CPR Certification

Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • • May be exposed to radiation during procedures. • May be required to lift and move patients. • May be exposed to hazardous material and infectious diseases.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
