The role you’ll contribute:
The Laboratory Assistant II performs various laboratory support procedures in assigned areas which may include
phlebotomy and/or specimen processing in clinical and anatomical pathology areas. The Laboratory Assistant II must
meet the required basic continuing education and department specific requirements. Work customarily involves practical
knowledge in various laboratory procedures and support functions.

- Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include:
identification, insurance information, physician credentials and test order requirements.
oBlood specimen collection to include phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups
oGeneral equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation
oReceives, and processes patient specimens which includes separating specimens by centrifugation prior to testing. May
include transporting.
oAliquots different sample types, if needed, and either loads preanalytical instruments, which include automated
stainers, or delivers them to the testing department
oCytopreparatory staining
oAccessioning of surgical cases that requires a knowledge of anatomy.
oReceive and set up cultures. Inoculation of different petri dishes for bacterial growth
oBlood and/or Blood Component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a
validated Transfusion Information System
oPerforms periodic preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned
oCleaning and disinfection of selected or assigned laboratory equipment and spaces, and other pre-analytical activities
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
- Technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory procedures or processes performed in department or work area
- Able to effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English with patients, staff, and customers of varied
- Ability to read text and numbers in English, with demonstrated ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem
- Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other
- Mature judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within AdventHealth guidelines and applicable
- Ability to handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and have good comprehension of conversational English
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Performs waived testing with uniformity, consistency, reliability, reproducibility, quality, and integrity of
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED:
- High School degree or equivalent
- Six months of relevant healthcare experience
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program
- Six Months experience in AdventHealth Lab
REQUIRED:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification if required by facility
- PBT(ASCP) or MLA (ASCP) or equivalent
