Job Title: Medical Assistant
Department: Back Office
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Basic Function:
Responsible for daily patient care and flow of clinic activities. Position requires good
understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Knowledge of medical
instrumentation and its proper care and usage needed. Ability to assess common safety
hazards and take precaution to establish a safe work environment required. Ability to
communicate with patients, co-workers, managers and doctors is critical. Must maintain
great customer service at all times. Must be able to properly use all office equipment
including but not limited to visual field, IOL Master, OCT and Fundus/Fluorecein
Angiography photos, Ultrasonography, Lensometer, (Corneal Topographer,
Autorefractor), etc.
Responsibilities:
o Takes patient histories and complaints, documents properly in charts as instructed.
o Checks vision accurately, checks patient eye pressure, and instills eye drops as
needed.
o Performs further testing including OCT, VF and Photos, IOL master scans,
Ultrasonography, Lensometer.
o Communicates with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures,
changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc.
o Assist minor surgery.
o Scribes in the chart for Physician appropriately documenting all necessary
information to be compliant for correct coding initiation.
o Basic ophthalmic coding.
o Writes all necessary prescription for patients, having Physician sign including all
medication prescribed.
o Checks exam room daily for used instruments to be sterilized and restocked.
o Maintains equipment including all laser, autoclave, testing equipment.
o Stocks rooms with adequate supplies as needed to include all exams and surgical
rooms.
o Maintains inventory of supplies needed, orders inventory when necessary.
o Calls in prescriptions refills as needed. Returns all patient phone calls within 24
hours.
o Recalls and assisting in patient retention.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:
High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet based
software.
