GENERAL SUMMARY (THE VALUE YOU WILL ADD TO OUR TEAM):

Acute Rescue employs Non-Medical Transportation Drivers with a passion for customer service, and a heart for helping others. Acute Rescue’s Non-Medical Transportation Drivers provide safe, reliable, courteous, compassionate, and professional wheelchair, gurney, and ambulatory transportation to residents in the community. Prior experience working in medical transportation, driving a van, and operating of a gurney and wheelchair is preferable. Additional training will be provided.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Non-Medical Transportation Drivers provide Non-Emergency Specialty Transportation to people who require a little extra attention, support, and time to get to and from their appointments within the healthcare system. This position is a great entry-level position for anyone looking to enter the field of EMS, including EMT students who have not yet obtained their NREMT, to join our exceptional team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Non-Medical Transportation Driver

  • Ensure the safety and comfort of our patients while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Safely operate an Acute Rescue fully equipped transportation vehicle helping get patients utilizing a wheelchair or gurney into the vehicle, making sure they are properly secured, comfortable, and taking them to where they are scheduled to go in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate the use of safety equipment and ensure safety requirements are met
  • Answer patients’ questions and provide assistance when necessary, particularly those with special needs
  • Reassure patients during the trips, such as when you experience delays.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding role which requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching and lifting (i.e., pushing/pulling wheelchairs and gurneys), able to work in outdoor temperatures year around, lift over 50 pounds, and maneuver 150 pounds or more.
  • Ability to use two-way radio and/or cellular phone for communication purposes in a professional manner and utilizing proper etiquette according to ART standards.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, legible logs and records.
  • Ability to participate in safety training/certification programs.
  • Ability to detect irregular vehicle performance in order to recognize required maintenance or repairs.
  • Ability to maintain excellent attendance and punctuality in order to meet specific deadlines.
  • Ability to use electronic mapping and navigational tools for routing.
  • Ability to safely interact with trip scheduling software and communicate questions and delays to our Communications Center.
  • Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, gurney and other special equipment. Training will be provided.
  • Document passenger information according to policy
  • Gather passenger data and ancillary records according to policy
  • Maintain passenger confidentiality according to HIPAA and perform all services with respect for passenger rights
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-stocked environment for passengers
  • Operate and drive a passenger van and possibly an ambulance in conjunction with applicable safety policies and laws
  • Flexibility to allow for moving from one type of transportation to another throughout your workday.
  • High energy level and positive attitude.
  • Successful Drivers communicate clearly with both clients and other employees, and present a professional overall image and appearance.
  • Approaches others in a tactful manner, reacts well under pressure, and treats others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position.
  • Follows instructions, responds to management direction, takes responsibility for own actions and keeps commitments, contribute to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals, completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with safe driving record;
  • Obtain and maintain ART training requirements as assigned by ART
  • Knowledge of the street systems, addresses and physical layout of assigned region
  • Skill in understanding and effectively dealing with emotional and medical needs of patients;
  • Performs as an EMS Driver on the ambulance as needed.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and orders;
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude when representing ART;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with ART staff and facilities they serve;
  • Ability to safely drive and operate emergency vehicles and retain Emergency Vehicle Operations Course training;
  • Ability to work twelve (12) and twenty-four (24) hour shifts;
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required to ensure timely and quality response services.
  • Responsible for the completion of paperwork for each transport.
  • Must be flexible with work time (in the event a resident appointment or activity runs late).
  • Must be able to make complex decisions involving highly dependent patient base.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Knowledge of rescue and emergency medical equipment;
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance of rescue and medical equipment;
  • EMT-Basic knowledge or experience
  • Knowledge of common medical terminology
  • Certified in BLS CPR

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore is subject to random drug testing;
  • Non-Medical Transportation Drivers must wear Department uniforms while on duty and be responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of both dress and safety uniforms, as well as all issued equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Non-Medical Transportation drivers are required to operate patient transport vehicles, (which may include ambulances), move medical equipment and extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations involving vehicular, hospital, facility, and residential locations;
  • At times the work requires movement over various types of terrain (hilly, steep, rocky, rough, and/or wet/ slippery surfaces) and all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to rain, snow, heat, etc.;
  • Non-Medical Transportation Drivers must be able to carry or help carry someone from the site of illness or injury to the mode of transportation (vehicle/helicopter)
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 150 pounds (250 pounds with assistance);
  • Non-Medical Transportation Drivers must see, hear and communicate with the patient in order to perform an accurate physical assessment in the event that the patient requires a higher level of care than was requested.
  • May be exposed to an uncontrolled environment to which the Driver could be exposed to harm and exposure to bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infections materials.
