Title of Position: Middle School Basketball Coach

Position Type: Seasonal Boys and Girls Basketball Coach, 5-month position.

  • As members of the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA), AcademyACL employees contribute to PERA; AcademyACL employees do not contribute to, nor receive, Social Security benefits for this employment.
  • Beginning January 1, 2021, the state of Colorado enacted the Healthy Family & Workplaces Act (HFWA). Part-time employees will receive 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked per HFWA.

Summary of Position:

This is a special assignment from October - February 2022-23.

Candidates will be interviewed and chosen for this position based on their ability to coach middle school basketball and serve after school Monday - Thursday and on select Friday and Saturdays.

Educational Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma Required;
  • Experience in the given sport required;
  • Awareness of Special Needs preferred;
  • Colorado Licensure and/or Gifted Education Endorsement welcome
  • Preference for Teacher Candidates, College “Education” Majors or Minors, Retired/Experienced Teachers or Educators

Reports To: The Academy Director.

Job Description Specific Assistant Tasks:

  • Demonstrate leadership ability and serve as a positive role model for students
  • Build and sustain a strong connection with middle school teachers as needed, and maintain student's focus on academic achievement
  • Execution of administrative tasks (student sign out of materials, paperwork, etc)
  • Represent AcademyACL at district coach's meetings
  • Assume responsibility and proper use of program resources (i.e.; equipment, supplies, facilities, etc.)
  • Demonstrate superior knowledge of game skills and strategies
  • Organize and manage end of season banquets (with support of assistants / volunteers, office staff as needed)

  • Responsible for celebrating student achievement
  • Responsible for functioning as a calm and positive member of a great learning environment

Culture, Climate & Learning environment:

  • Safety: Responsible for maintaining the assigned areas and supporting secure, safe educational environment of classroom, hallways, playground, and related areas, as appropriate
  • Classroom Management: Responsible for consistently, positively, addressing student violations of the Social Contract
  • De-Escalation: Responsible to use a consistently calm voice- including not speaking when needed- and to use appropriate de-escalation techniques with any students who become “antsy”, are having a bad day or moment, are dysregulated, etc.
  • Confidentiality. Responsible for maintaining the privacy of students
  • Conflict Resolution. Responsible for maintaining respectful, kind, and professional working relationships with any AcademyACL staff.
    • This includes supporting individual work styles and/or scheduling a time to meet with the Academy Director or Dean to ask for coaching on how to approach an issue, or to ask for facilitation of a solution-finding opportunity for any issues as they arise.

Physical Requirements: This job requires a high activity level that includes movement throughout the building, active involvement with student activities including jogging, jumping, etc. This job may require safety strategies for supporting students who are working on behavior plans, such as CPI/Crisis Prevention training and techniques designed to protect students and self from injury. This job also requires emotional stamina and personal stress management to maintain a positive approach with students, parents, families, and colleagues throughout the entire scheduled time, including students with very high energy and some with low impulse control.

Other Position Requirements:

Certain trainings and meetings will be required and therefore part of paid-time; other trainings will be ‘open welcome’ where the teacher’s aide is invited to attend if interested, but not required, and therefore not paid for that time. No extended travel will be required; local travel may be required to attend additional training.
