TYPICAL TASKS: Essential Functions: Drives any school bus over any designated route according to an established time schedule; transports students on special educational trips and to athletic events; escort children across streets when necessary; stop traffic as necessary, supervises the conduct of students while on a school bus, school campus and at approved bus stops; cleans and services bus; checks vehicles for proper maintenance and safety; keeps trip records and makes simple reports; does general maintenance work such as washing, cleaning, fueling buses, pick up and deliver materials and supplies when assigned. Marginal Functions: May also be assigned to automotive mechanical and delivery duties when not engaged in bus driving tasks; may assist grounds crew or maintenance personnel.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Required: Demonstrated experience in the operation of automotive vehicles; possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Commercial License, Class A or B; with a passenger and school bus endorsement, possession of a valid California Special School Bus Driver's Certificate, issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; possession of a valid Type I California School Bus Driver’s Certificate with air brake endorsement, Automatic Transmission Only, and/or First Aid Test Wiaed, but must comply with 2252(c) v.c.; must be available to work a split shift, if necessary; and must be neat in appearance.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the safe operation and general maintenance of a school bus; knowledge of the Vehicle Code, Education Code, Title 13 California Code of Regulations and district policies related to the transportation of students; ability to supervise and discipline students; ability to adhere to time schedules; ability to maintain simple records; and ability to follow written and oral instructions.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Environmental Conditions: Field/shop environment; drive a school bus; exposure to gas and fumes. Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, stooping or bending for prolonged periods of time; bending and stooping; and operating motorized vehicles.
