Job Title: Temporary Prep Chef/Kitchen Assistant

Department: Wellness

Reports to: Head Chef/Kitchen Manager and Sous Chef/Kitchen Coordinator

FLSA Status/Hours: Temporary Position Up to 30 Hours Per Week

Classification: Essential (onsite daily)


SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Head Chef/Kitchen Manager and Associate Director of Wellness, the Prep Chef/Kitchen Assistant will provide support and assistance to the Kitchen team and be at the front-line for member safety and well being. The Program Assistant will translate mission, policy and REACH practice into direct application for members. The Assistant will support the preparation and delivery of daily food service and special events to APCH members, staff, and community members.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Follows the direction of the Head Chef/Kitchen Manager & Sous Chef/Kitchen Coordinator and supports the preparation and proper distribution of daily meals and snacks (up to 400 served per day)
  • Assists with the cleaning and maintenance of the kitchen
  • Assures preparation of food is compliant with dietary and health department standards
  • Compliant with all kitchen safety standards and ensures any volunteers, temporary workers, and APCH members in the kitchen follow all protocols
  • Supports with catered special events (i.e. Thanksgiving, Scholarship Luncheon, and department program events as scheduled, etc.)
  • Assists with tracking and documenting temperature controls
  • Builds knowledge of healthful ingredients and cooking methods
  • Supports other team members in carrying out the agency philosophy
  • Help in the implementation and continuation of the state and federal food programs(CACFP/SFSP) as directed by the Head Chef/Kitchen Manager and Associate Director of Wellness
  • Adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards and values at all times
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Education/Training/Experience

  • Experience working with school age youth
  • Experience working in food service or culinary arts
  • Basic knowledge of food preparation, presentation, and cooking methods
  • CACFP/SFSP Mandated Trainings (Ongoing)
  • Bi-lingual, English/Spanish (preferred)
  • Familiarity of time and temperature relationships associated with appearance and palatability of food per regulations


Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in an active and high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Walking, standing required on daily basis
  • Sitting and use of hands/vision for computer work
  • Lift up to 30-50 pounds regularly
  • Willing and able to clean kitchen space and equipment
  • Able to communicate clearly and convey accurate information


Additional Information

  • Must be willing to work some evenings and/or weekends
  • Passion for working with children and young adults
