500 WP Company LLC is Hiring a Remote Theater Critic

Job Description The Washington Post is seeking an exceptional theater critic to be the paper’s leading voice on the artform, helping us rethink our coverage while writing trenchantly and imaginatively on productions in Washington, New York and beyond. We’re looking for a curious, discerning and lively audience surrogate whose recommendations consumers will trust, as well as a journalist who will be immersed in two vibrant theater towns. One who’s eager to take some big swings: We want this writer to enrich readers’ thinking about the American stage, from new works to revivals, from dramas to musicals, and on the surprising ways that theater manifests across the culture. We’re eager to shape this role around the successful candidate, though we’ll expect you to widen the aperture of the job, both in terms of the kinds of works a critic considers and the way that one considers them. It’ll be fun. But you tell us what a Washington Post theater critic should – and could – be in 2024. Responsibilities: Write theater reviews, but also reported essays, commentaries, profiles and more – including news and analysis when warranted. Work collaboratively with reporters, editors and visual journalists, both within the Features department and across the newsroom. Represent The Post as its leading voice on American theater, including at occasional events or in media appearances, but particularly on platforms where we engage directly with our audiences. Preferred qualifications: At least five years of experience writing cultural criticism and a track record of sharp, conversation-starting work. The ability to spot trends early and bring together reporting, context, critical insight and analysis in a way that distinguishes The Post’s theater coverage from its competitors. A commitment to innovative storytelling formats and approaches, which requires close collaboration with a variety of teams across the newsroom. Past experience covering theater is a plus but not strictly required. This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom or in our New York bureau. Interested applicants should upload a résumé, three work samples (as PDFs) and a cover letter describing their interest and experience to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by March 10 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to Deputy Features Editor Hank Stuever, Arts and Entertainments Editor Jonathan Fischer, and Style Senior Editor Zachary Pincus-Roth. Wherever you are in your life or career, The Washington Post offers comprehensive and inclusive benefits for every step of your journey: Competitive medical, dental and vision coverage Company-paid pension and 401(k) match Three weeks of vacation and up to three weeks of paid sick leave Nine paid holidays and two personal days 20 weeks paid parental leave for any new parent Robust mental health resources Backup care and caregiver concierge services Gender affirming services Pet insurance Free Post digital subscription Leadership and career development programs Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status. The Washington Post includes salary ranges for certain positions to comply with local pay transparency laws. The annual salary range for this position is: $97,400 - $162,300. The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed. The innovation doesn’t end in the Newsroom – dozens of teams power The Washington Post.
