The Opportunity This position works out of the Plano, TX or Sylmar, CA or Santa Clara, CA locations in the Medical Devices Digital Solutions organization. The Software Architect, Digital Solutions reports to the Head of Technology, Digital Solutions. The Software Architect role will work with cross-functional teams to plan, develop, and deliver state of the art Digital Health technologies supporting our patients and customers. The Software Architect role will provide technical leadership for product software development of new digital products. The Software Architect role will develop the software architecture in close collaboration with system engineering function, relying on model-based software development and a continuously evolving software architecture approach, which extends from microcontrollers to embedded systems to server applications. Working closely with stakeholders, project managers, developers, and clients, the role will translate requirements into scalable and efficient software architectures. The role’s expertise in software design principles, system integration, and emerging technologies will be critical in guiding the development team towards creating robust and maintainable solutions. WHAT YOU’LL DO Providing technical vision, maintain integrity and direction to product software teams throughout the software development lifecycle. Collaborating with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements, translating them into architectural blueprints and technical specifications. Designing high-level software architectures that meet functional and non-functional requirements, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability. Conducting code reviews to ensure compliance with architectural standards, best practices, and coding conventions. Identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks, scalability issues, and architectural limitations in software systems. Identifying potential risks and dependencies in software architectures, proposing mitigation strategies to ensure project success. Creating and maintaining technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design documents, and system manuals. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including developers, testers, and system administrators, to ensure seamless integration and deployment of software solutions. Engage and lead discussions with external current and potential future vendors/partners. Mentoring junior developers and sharing knowledge of architectural principles, design patterns, and best practices. Researching and evaluating new technologies, tools, and frameworks to recommend the most appropriate solutions for implementation. Critical Success Indicators: Successfully built and commercialized multiple Digital solutions and services from concept through launch using agile processes in both consumer tech and med tech. Successfully defined a scalable and extensible technical software architecture with clear delineation between internal and external contributions. Demonstrated experience in creating Digital Solutions that seamlessly fit into customer and patient desired workflows. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Systems, Computer, Electrical, Biomedical, or Software), or related discipline. 15 years of experience in a similar position, including systems integration experience/integrating all system components, system and software architecture, requirement/user need gathering, and/or end-to-end (ideation to commercialization) technical product development experience. Demonstrated ability to effectively integrate information from varied disciplines and work within a highly regulated environment. In-depth knowledge of software architecture styles, design patterns, and architectural principles. Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript. Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). Strong understanding of database technologies (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and data modeling principles. Experience incorporating Security by Design principles into software. Proficiency with software requirements management and software design modeling tools. Ability to recognize various architectural patterns, apply them appropriately, understand strengths/weaknesses within those architectures and develop architectural variations as necessary. Familiarity with multiple, diverse technical integrations, technologies, and processing environments Experience developing regulated medical device software that strictly adheres to design controls and quality management system requirements. Significant experience working with agile software development methods, such as scrum and Kanban and exposure to working within CI/CD pipelines. Ability to work effectively across multiple departments, countries, and time zones. Self-motivated to complete tasks timely with competence; driven to self-educate and improve processes. Excellent technical, troubleshooting & mentoring skills. Strong verbal, written and presentation skills with ability to build trust. Results oriented with focused urgency, prioritization skills and ability to recognize/escalate issues appropriately. Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving technologies and industry trends. Preferred: Medical Device experience Solid understanding of the design thinking process, as well as a passion and know-how for influencing design strategy. Experience with microservices architecture and distributed systems. Certification in software architecture (e.g., TOGAF, AWS/Azure Certified Solutions Architect). Knowledge of software security principles and best practices. Familiarity with machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies.
