The Atlantic is seeking a Manager, Creative Operationsto supervise the editorial design team. We’re looking for a seasoned people manager who can collaborate effectively across all editorial platforms—including the print magazine, website, podcasts, the app, and social platforms—as well as coordinate with design partners on the Product team. The Manager will lead day-to-day management of The Atlantic’s art department, and support the Creative Director in leading the team’s work on design, illustration, and photography across The Atlantic’s journalism. The ideal candidate will be a strategic partner, assisting in managing the intricacies of our editorial processes. With a focus on effective communication, this person will collaborate closely with various teams within The Atlantic to foster a cohesive vision across all platforms. This role involves establishing and maintaining systems to handle multiple projects and deadlines.This person will be pivotal in ensuring smooth sequencing and project management while managing an ambitious and experienced team. Qualifications of the ideal candidate: Minimum of 5 years managing, coaching, and developing employees in creative environments Experience managing projects, presenting to audiences, and communicating effectively with internal stakeholders Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work effectively under deadlines and to manage concurrent projects. Experience with handling department budgets is a plus. Adaptability to change and grace under pressure Clear communication skills and a collaborative spirit The conviction that high-quality journalism is fundamentally important—and the desire to help it thrive Established relationships with photographers, illustrators, and other artists, and an eye for emerging talent and diverse perspectives Astute design sense and facility with both conceptual and reportorial work Experience with Adobe Creative tools, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign/K4 is a plus This position is based in New York City.
