POSITION PURPOSE AND EXAMPLES OF WORK:

POSITION PURPOSE: To maintain security of a juvenile detention facility by visual observation and physical control of entrances and exits in order to ensure the safety and security of residents and staff and to enter and retrieve computer data.

MAJOR TASK STATEMENTS & REPRESENTATIVE ACTIVITIES (Percentage of Time):

50% Maintain security in detention by controlling access to doors, monitoring camera, and intercom system. Screen visitors and secure property.

  • Control access in and out of Detention facility.
· Carefully screen all people requesting access to Detention, and log their visits.
· Operate/monitor cameras and intercom system for activity in and around the facility.
· Collect, log, and securely store juvenile property.
· Oversee and coordinate juvenile visitation procedures.
· Track court dockets and ensure juveniles are prepared to appear in Court.
· Communicate with staff via telephone, intercom, or two-way radios.
20% Enter data into computer databases. Perform inquiries in law enforcement database.
  • Enter inquiries and data in large Law Enforcement database system on a Federal, State, and local level.
· Enter and cancel juvenile arrest warrants, wanted records, and information on youth detained and released.
· Conduct criminal records checks for various agencies and departments.
· Send, receive, and respond to electronic messages from Law Enforcement.
· Enter juvenile information from intake to discharge.
· Process emergency ex-parte orders at the request of adult abuse shelters.
30% Perform associated duties in providing for the safety and security of staff and juvenile residents.
  • Act as a screening officer in their absence for new arrivals in Detention.
· Follow procedures for facility security, such as key/tool/property control.
· Answer phone calls and provide information.
· Report needed device and equipment repairs/malfunctions for necessary repairs/replacements.
· Execute emergency management plans as necessary in the event of a disturbance, or other unforeseen incidents.
· Perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION OF: None.
SUPERVISION BY: Supervisor, Control Room provides general supervision.
INTERNAL: All levels of Family Court staff. Provides for access to Detention facility. Performs inquiries in Law Enforcement system to check criminal backgrounds of juveniles, foster parents, and volunteers.
EXTERNAL: Juveniles, parents/guardians, attorneys representing juveniles, Children’s Division staff, Division of Youth Services, and Law Enforcement Personnel.
PRIMARY EQUIPMENT, TOOLS & MATERIALS USED: Computer, keyboard & printer, copy machine, telephone, intercom system, mobile radios, standard office equipment, physical restraint devices (handcuffs/shackles), and keys.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    EDUCATION: High School graduate, or recognized equivalent.
    EXPERIENCE: Minimum one year experience in Law Enforcement, corrections, or security-related field is preferred. Some work experience involving personal computer operation.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum age requirement is 25 years old.
· Applicants for this position are subject to certification requirements for access to Law Enforcement databases, which includes fingerprinting for criminal records checks on a local/State/Federal level.
· Qualify and maintain certification to access and operate Law Enforcement computer systems.
· Must submit to and pass sex offender registry check, and MO/KS child abuse & neglect checks.
· Must submit to and pass criminal background checks as prescribed by the Court.
· All applicants for this position are subject to testing for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
· Employees in this position are subject to random and reasonable suspicion testing for illegal drug use.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Basic computer procedures and word processing/spreadsheet software.
· Good verbal and written communication skills.
· Good typing and/or alpha-numeric data entry skills.
· Ability to type 35 wpm, minimum.
· Ability to provide effective customer service.

· Ability to make sound decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
· Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

JOB ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is performed within a secured, or non-secured facility.
· Subject to youth who are aggressive and volatile and those who have psychiatric, or other needs.
· Work mandatory overtime as required.
