Raytheon is Hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer Near Tucson, AZ

Date Posted:

2024-02-25

Country:

United States of America

Location:

AZ861: RMS Rita Road Bldg 9030 9000 South Rita Road Building 9030, Tucson, AZ, 85747 USA

Position Role Type:

Onsite

At Raytheon, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in our values and a higher calling – to help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression. We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.

The Air Launched Effectors Department is searching for a full time Principal Mechanical Engineer to assist and/or lead a multi-discipline team working on the design, development and/or production support of products and subsystems, for the purpose of giving the U.S. Air Force and our allies an unmatched advantage across every mission phase. From long-range surveillance sensors to command and control, to advanced air and ground effectors, we provide the technology required to keep the air domain secure.

The primary work location will be on-site at the Raytheon Tucson office. Some travel may be required to meet and work with vendors and to support testing and other activities as needed.

The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance is required prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Job Summary: The Principal Mechanical Engineer will conduct design, integration, testing and/or production support of mechanical-focused hardware using computer-aided design, mechanical analyses, and consistent coordination and communication across teams to ensure success. This role will also include leading teams in the completion of above tasks.

Responsibilities to Anticipate:

  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, subassemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.

  • Develop solutions to a wide range of technical problems related to the design, manufacture, integration, and production of various mechanical subsystems, including support in the engineering lab and the factory floor both at Raytheon and at suppliers.

  • Contribute to first article inspections, work instruction reviews, material dispositions, and root cause investigations to production issues. Decisions are data driven and require preparing technical justification analysis reports and presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards.

  • Contribute to one or more of our contract-funded and independent research efforts, each of which is at a different phase of development (proposal, design, integration/test, and production). Engineers are generally assigned to one effort at a time but may work multiple efforts over the course of several years.

  • Communicate with and/or lead cross-disciplined, diverse engineering team members and suppliers to analyze, model, and document the design technical data package (TDP) and its capabilities and compliance to requirements.

  • Work under limited supervision and act as the responsible engineer over entire subsystems within an effort. This often requires the ability to direct, delegate and review the work of others.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of experience in mechanical design, development, and/or test, preferably of defense-related components or systems.

  • Experience in airframe development, air vehicle component packaging or mechanisms, for missiles or similar applications

  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5, tolerance analyses, and drawing practices and interpretation for mechanical hardware

  • Experience developing and executing plans to develop mechanical components or subsystems

  • Experience in 3D CAD tools (modeling and drawing)

  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Value:

  • Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, Engineering Science, Math, or other Engineering disciplines

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience within Defense and/or Aerospace Industry, typically 8-15 years

  • Engineering team leadership experience

  • Experience with thermal and structural analyses or with analysts to specify requirements and design to environments.

  • Experience with RCCA, FMECA and DFMA practices

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to work in teams or independently; flexible, motivated and demonstrating initiative

  • Experience in mechanical sub-systems packaging, materials, thermal, structural analysis, energetics principals, control systems, interconnect, airframe, or large assembly development

  • Mechanical aptitude to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of complex scope and complexity

  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities

  • Experience with effective communication (written and verbal) during collaboration with others to document design actions and results, to perform trade studies, and to communicate to program management and customers through presentations and reports.
