Highside develops, invests in, and manages the following:
  • Asset classes: hospitality (primarily extended-stay), multifamily, residential, storage, and other adjacent asset types.
  • Structures: Co-GP, GP/LP and Canadian Mutual Fund Trust; direct investment in underlying real estate; development and development management as a service.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for all aspects of the financial integrity and financial reporting for the Company’s, JV Partners’ and Funds’ existing and future development portfolios. We will look to the Controller to determine best practices, workflows and processes to help the Company scale rapidly. Highside has a flat management structure, and this position will frequently interact with Senior Executives at the Company. Accordingly, this is an in-person, full-time position.

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage a small but growing accounting team in day-to-day accounting functions, including training team members; planning, assigning, and directing work; communicating job expectations; appraising performance; coaching, counseling and disciplining employees; maintaining and growing team as needed by recruiting, selecting, and orienting employees.
  • Oversee all accounting operations of the Company and its unconsolidated affiliates, including the production of periodic financial statements/reports, maintenance of the general ledger (GL) and financial reporting systems, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risks and enhance the accuracy of the Company’s reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Oversee and maintain the rigorous monthly and quarterly GL close schedule that involves period closing activities such as journal entries, reconciliation, treasury/bank activities, cash management, vendor on-boarding, payroll, tangible assets, amortization and depreciation, goodwill and intangible assets, reviewing and signing off on prepared fund financial packages and other activities/processes needed to be completed during the month-end/quarter-end close of the Company’s books.
  • Assess the Company’s current accounting landscape and determine needs across corporate accounting, internal controls, consolidations, reporting, technical accounting, billing/credit/collections, procure to pay, and payroll.
  • Oversee the creation, refinement, and implementation of accounting policies and procedures, including researching and documenting technical accounting memos for same.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with FP&A team.
  • Manage the monthly development draw process in very close coordination with the Development and Investments teams.
  • Oversee and review the analysis, flux, and variance explanations of the parent company’s consolidated monthly and quarterly financials, which includes but is not limited to the following:
o Consolidated Balance Sheet,
o Consolidated Income Statement,
o Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows,
o Monthly Budget vs Actuals Income statement analysis,
o Net asset value (NAV) Statement,
o Quarterly debt covenant statement.
  • Oversee and work directly with external auditors charged with conducting interim and year-end GAAP reviews and tax preparation/filings around the Company financials.
  • Manage both internal and external accounting and financial reporting resources and strengthen/maintain communications with staff at all levels throughout the entire organization.
  • Participate in meetings with Senior Executives, and FP&A team to address and provide solutions to issues as they may arise.
  • Support Senior Executives and FP&A team in preparation and maintenance of budgets, cash flow forecasts & financial analysis.
  • Assist with compliance reporting for insurance, banks and stakeholders.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of payments and cash receipts.
  • Manage federal and state tax filings and estimated tax distributions.
  • In close coordination with General Counsel, manage new entity formations, renewals and compliance.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting; CPA license required.
  • 7-10 years’ work experience; Top-Tier public accounting experience a plus.
  • Real estate experience is preferred.
  • Strong leadership and teamwork ability.
  • Experience in managing accounting personnel in a dynamic and high growth environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, problem analysis, and ability to see the big picture.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Yardi accounting software.
  • Focus on a corporate culture that values open communication and a “best idea wins” approach.
  • Ability to work after hours, as needed.
  • Keen judgment, strong work ethic, and an “all hands” approach to teamwork.

COMPENSATION
Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation for this position will include:
  • $125,000-$165,000 annual base salary based on experience.
  • Discretionary bonus, which is not guaranteed and is dependent upon individual and Company performance.
  • Ability to participate in some form of long-term incentive or profit sharing; to vary based on experience.
  • 401k, medical, dental and vision benefits; unlimited paid time off (subject to manager approval); paid holidays; life insurance; short and long-term disability insurance, employee assistance program, and more.
