Position Description:

The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Communications and is an integral part of the two-person Communications Office. The ideal candidate is creative, eager, detail-oriented, intuitive, and strategic. They possess excellent writing and communication skills, with fluency in marketing and digital media and a passion for storytelling.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of communications that support the school's mission and goals.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications, work closely with Admissions, Development, and the Head of School to coordinate the message of the Birch Wathen Lenox School. Provide strategic communications guidance and support to colleagues across the institution.
  • Design graphics for use on social media, the website, and printed materials.
  • Assist with monthly parent and alumni newsletters.
  • Photograph and video special events and daily activities around school. Seek out opportunities to capture photos and video. Edit and package content for cross-platform use on social media, the website, monthly newsletters, dedicated emails, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Admissions Office and assist in admissions marketing plans.
  • Coordinate with the Development Office on development communications including printed and digital materials for the Annual Fund, Annual Appeal, Benefit, Alumni activities, New Parent events, etc.
  • Help plan and execute digital communications campaigns.
  • Write content for and assist with the production of the school magazine.
  • Develop and distribute communication to current families and internal constituents using the Blackbaud Pushpage system.
  • Develop and distribute communication to external contacts using Constant Contact.
  • Create and manage content for the school's website, social media accounts, and other communication channels.
  • Manage content production through the use of the social media calendar and evaluate impact through regular analytics reporting.
  • Coordinate and support external contractors including photographers, videographers, designers, and others.
  • Assist the Advancement team in organizing and staging events, including some on nights and weekends.
  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies and adjust plans accordingly.
  • Manage communication-related data in Blackbaud Student Information System.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform any other assigned tasks.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 3 years of experience in communications or marketing, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and video editing software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Understanding of independent schools and their communication needs.
  • Experience with digital marketing, social media, and web design platforms.
  • Proficiency with CMS, social media and social media management tools, video editing software, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, and the Google Suite
  • A sense of humor and the ability to remain calm in a fast-paced environment

Salary Range: $70,000–$90,000 commensurate with experience.

  • Birch Wathen Lenox has an excellent benefits package, including health insurance mostly paid by the employer, retirement account with employer match, eight weeks of vacation, and summer hours with the option of a hybrid schedule. The full benefits package will be shared early in the interview process.
