The Hult Center is seeking a managing director

The Hult Center is truly the artistic heart of the city, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead the team in deepening and strengthening the foundation of an already irreplaceable community asset.

The managing director serves as the administrative leader of the Hult Center and receives general direction from the Cultural Services Director.

They also provide complex operational and staff support to the Cultural Services Director and collaborate with the City's broader Library, Recreation, and Cultural Services team.

Job Description

Here's what we'll be trusting you with

  • Develops and implements strategies to maximize revenue generation through event programming, venue rentals, sponsorships, and partnerships.
  • Oversees the financial management of the Hult Center, including budget development, forecasting, monitoring, and revision.
  • Responsible for efficient facility operations and maintenance, preventive safety measures, and safe equipment.
  • Leads capital planning initiatives for facility improvements and upgrades, working closely with stakeholders to prioritize projects and secure funding.
  • Analyzes and evaluates the financial performance of the Hult Center, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions to enhance efficiency and profitability.
  • Directs, oversees, and participates in the development of the section work plan; prioritizes and assigns work activities, projects, and programs; monitors workflow; implements policies and procedures; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Represents the Hult Center in negotiations with artists, promoters, and other stakeholders to secure high-profile performances and events.
  • Collaborates with marketing and sales teams to develop innovative promotional campaigns and drive ticket sales and attendance.
  • Cultivates relationships with local businesses, community organizations, and funding agencies to support the mission and goals of the Hult Center.
  • Responsible for the selection, supervision, and evaluation of staff; assigns work and ensures appropriate training is provided; investigates complaints; recommends and administers disciplinary actions; handles sensitive personnel matters and recommends grievance responses; exercises full supervision over employees.
  • Provides leadership and direction to staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provides complex operational staff assistance to the Cultural Services Director; prepares and presents staff reports and other correspondence; backfills the role of Cultural Services Director as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Hult Center and other city departments, advisory boards, and community groups; makes professional presentations regarding industry trends, annual reports, and other information to a variety of organizations.
  • Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Marketing and sales techniques for securing/promoting performing arts events and attracting audiences.
  • Developing reports and presentations related to the business of publicly managed facilities.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions related to the work done by various work groups.
  • Local government policies, procedures, and regulations related to cultural services.
  • Effective leadership and management styles and practices.
  • Principles and practices of organization, administration, and personnel management, including those related to unionized environments and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience supervising and motivating staff.
  • Financial acumen, with the ability to develop and manage budgets, analyze financial data, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, negotiate, and administer a variety of service contracts and agreements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including outside agencies, organizations, and community groups.
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to prepare and present effective reports and communications on a variety of complex information.
  • Creativity and innovation, with a demonstrated ability to advance the mission and goals of the Hult Center.
  • Ability to work irregular and flexible hours

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Education:

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in arts management, business administration, technical theater, finance, or a related field.

Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience:

Five years of responsible professional experience in revenue generation, financial management, and/or capital planning in a performing arts or cultural organization, including two years in a managerial or full supervisory capacity.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid Oregon driver's license.

In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the City of Eugene will request all eligible candidates who accept employment with the City to provide documentation to prove they are eligible for employment in the United States.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office environment. Daily standing and sitting for prolonged periods and regular focus on a computer screen. Attendance at meetings or activities outside normal working hours and including weekends is expected. The position requires operation of a motor vehicle on public roads.

Compensation

Salary Range $115,897.60 - 156,457.60 annually

The City of Eugene determines starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials. This process is consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act (OEPA) ().
