Pay Range: $200,000 - $250,000 annually, depending on experience. Bonus of up to 30% of salary based on meeting annual performance measures.

In Office / Remote / Hybrid: This position is a hybrid position. Successful candidate must live in San Diego Metro area and will travel to our clinical and executive offices.

Travel Requirements: Predominately local travel in Southern California, some over-night travel to industry meetings.

Overall Role Description

The COO is the business leader of the three primary companies of Balboa. They share P&L responsibilities for the businesses with the President and CFO. You will be the accountable leader for all Balboa United staff in the operations lanes. Duties include building culture, staff development & education, annual goal development, business performance and results, compensation and bonus goals. You will also work with compliance and regulatory resources to ensure the company is always operating appropriately.

Specific Duties

  • Oversee operations for Balboa United, Balboa Nephrology Medical Group and all related non-clinical staff.
  • Develop and implement staff development and education.
  • Collaborate with leaders to establish goals that align with organizational objectives.
  • Ensure that compensation structure and rewards are driving the right behaviors and results
  • Participate in the annual budgeting process for your areas of responsibility.
  • Review monthly financials for the businesses and take action as needed to meet annual goals and budgets.
  • Company Culture – Support/Create a positive work culture across the business
    • Provide development opportunities for direct reports and high potential individuals.
    • Proactively turn over low performers to create a better organization.
    • Provide coaching and mentoring to improve the team.
  • Trusted Partner on the Executive Committee, which includes the Chairman of the Board, President, CFO and CMO. This is the day to day decision making body that supports running all the businesses.
  • Participate in monthly BNMG Board Meetings as a presenter and engaged participant.
  • Participate as a Board member on the Balboa United Board.
  • Co-lead along with the President the on-going strategic planning process for the businesses.
  • Along with the President, share relationship management responsibilities with Sharp, Scripps, Fresenius, DaVita, Frenova and DaVita Clinical Research and other key constituents to the businesses.
  • Be the key contact with Sharp Rees Stealy in terms of physician scheduling and maintaining this valuable relationship.
  • Negotiate and handle a myriad of contracts and legal documents related to the role. Engage outside counsel appropriately, have the wisdom to know when to use these resources and when not to.
  • Operate with a compliance mindset and thought framework. The best way to avoid trouble is not to get into trouble.
  • Oversee the on-going work of fractional contractors managing compliance, privacy and security officer roles for the businesses.
  • Support the VP of Finance in oversight and management of IT services. These services are provided by an outside contractor and customer satisfaction is an on-going requirement.

Background Requirements

  • 10 years of progressive operations experience in healthcare with leadership role including people management (100 )
  • BS Business or MBA degree, or a clinical degree with significant leadership and P&L experiences.
  • San Diego resident or willingness to move to San Diego Metro area with job acceptance. Move assistance can be negotiated for successful candidate.
  • Track record managing multi-million dollar budgets and business.
  • Significant experience working with doctors and a proven ability to be an “equal” thought partner for the business. Capable of pushing back respectfully with doctors on business related issues.
