Battery Park Authority is Hiring an Assistant Director of Communications & Public Affairs Near New York, NY

Position Summary: 

The Assistant Director of Communications & Public Affairs will play a critical role in supporting the activities of the Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs and advancing the work of the Department, which seeks to advance the Authority’s strategic objectives through best-in-class communications with our organization and the public. 

Essential Duties:

  • Promote the Authority’s work by developing and disseminating strategic proactive and responsive communications with Authority stakeholders, including residents, businesses, partner organizations, elected officials and their staff, as well as the general public;
  • Represent the Authority at community meetings and events as required (note: may occur during evenings or on weekends);
  • Develop and execute the Authority’s media strategies, including research, monitoring, message drafting, and web content updates to support Authority staff and partners;
  • Coordinate broad-based outreach and community engagement efforts as part of the Authority’s ongoing North/West Battery Park City Resiliency and South Battery Park City Resiliency projects;
  • Manage the Authority’s social media accounts and make regular updates to, and make recommendations as appropriate for enhancements to, the Authority’s website, bpca.ny.gov;
  • Monitor legislation that could impact BPCA and assist in the ongoing collaborative relationships the Authority seeks to develop with local elected officials;
  • Maintain and curate contact databases, distribution lists, and mailing lists with updates;
  • Modernize BPCA’s community newsletters and assist in preparation of its monthly internal staff newsletter; and
  • Manage the regular administrative work of the department, including, but not limited to, receiving and processing invoices, submitting requisitions, scheduling meetings, tracking the Authority’s internal and external communications, monitoring incoming media and stakeholder emails, and other administrative tasks as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Government, or a related field preferred
  • 5 years of relevant communications or public policy experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; confidence in communicating across a variety of platforms

Skills and Experience:

  • Self-starter who is proactive, responsive, creative, and collaborative;
  • Demonstrates attention to detail in a high-paced environment
  • Exceptional writer with superior organizational skills; able to juggle many different initiatives and competing priorities against tight deadlines;
  • Ability to pivot quickly and take appropriate initiative on issues requiring timely response or turnaround;
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to conceptualize, develop, and promote clear communications consistent with Authority priorities;
  • Digitally savvy with strong knowledge and experience with social media and large email distribution platforms;
  • Background in environmental sustainability or construction management a plus.
