SUMMARY: The Starmark Local, LLC Service Center Sales Specialist & Delivery Driver performs weekly white glove truck deliveries of Starmark Funeral Products to funeral homes and crematories located in Northern Florida. The typical route would include 10-12 stops at a maximum and would consist of partnering with a shuttle truck service to and from a distribution warehouse located in Lakeland, Florida. They also support the Service Center Director in fulfilling the needs of customers, growing the customer base through cold calling and funeral home visits, and otherwise developing existing customer relationships. This includes taking and processing orders when necessary and completing all tasks in order to fulfill the customers’ immediate and long-term needs. The position will require route zone deliveries two days per week and growth of the customer base the other three days through means of cold calling and customer visits. The role will adhere to excellent service standards to maintain high customer satisfaction. This position reports directly to the Service Center Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates 26’ box truck and delivery van for delivery of funeral products.
  • Completes Starmark Local, LLC Service Center Director Training program.
  • Assists the Service Center Director in leading sales growth and territory expansion.
  • Inspects trucks for defects before and after trips and submits reports indicating truck condition.
  • Assists in the coordination and execution of swapping shuttle trucks. 
  • Manages and maintains inventory at a small, satellite warehouse (1,000-2,000 SF).
  • When loading and receiving shuttle trucks, reviews delivery notes to ensure that all items listed are loaded and that all loaded items are listed. Corrects any discrepancies prior to starting the delivery by pulling product from a small warehouse. 
  • Maintains driver log according to Department of Transportation (“DOT”) regulations (no need to log if less than 150 miles as a crow flies).
  • Verifies delivery schedule is achievable before departing and ensures on-time delivery of customer orders.
  • Upon each delivery, double checks unloaded items against the delivery note and secures a signature from the recipient on the delivery note, collects any COD payments, and ensures reloading of all pads, stacks and straps.
  • Submits all signed delivery notes, logs, and other paperwork to Service Center Director, Customer Service Supervisor and Starmark Local Director of Operations in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensures a message of good quality and ethics to funeral professionals, crematory operators and the public. 
  • Acts as the face of Starmark Local, LLC and ensures professionalism and exceptional customer service at all times.
  • Holds responsibility for all facets of customer satisfaction from start to finish including responding to requests for information, identifying customer needs, implementing best possible solutions, processing orders and following up with the Service Center Director to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Builds sustainable relationships and trust during deliveries through open & interactive communication with other Team Members, Vandor Funeral Products organization, and funeral professionals and their staff.
  • Resolves any customer complaints or issues promptly by acting as a liaison between internal departments and the customer, coordinating customer refunds and/or exchange of goods, and reporting errors or miscommunicated information to appropriate Team Members through the Quality Reporting Tool.
  • Ensures all items are secured into proper position in trucks using pads, stacks, and straps in order to prevent damage during shipments including properly using specialized packaging (pad wrap) or loading (decking).
  • Strives for continuous improvement in all aspects of Starmark Local operations.
  • On days where deliveries are not needed, actively grows the customer base in all target delivery zones through cold calling, site visits and other means.
  • Performs at-need deliveries on non-scheduled delivery days. 
  • Accurately collects, records and communicates valid and complete data at all times, including but not limited to: relaying information to headquarters, inputting information into established computer programs (i.e. Syspro) and maintaining customer files using a CRM system in coordination with Customer Service.
  • Provides accurate, valid and complete information to Vandor Funeral Products headquarter offices. 
  • Responds to customer request for information, etc.
  • Maintains customer files and information in Syspro and CRM in coordination with the headquarter Customer Service offices and the Service Center Director. 
  • Attends state funeral conventions as needed by the Service Center Director. 
  • Maintains building lease terms and identify new lease space at end of any lease term if needed. 
  • Establishes, manages and secures clean and orderly warehouse space including obtaining building lease terms, ensuring all systems (HVAC, sprinkler systems, etc.) are in good working order, and identifying new lease space at end of any lease term, as needed and in coordination with Starmark Local Executive Team. 
  • Maintains company equipment and licenses including company phone numbers and coordinates security, forwarding, and backups with the Vandor headquarter IT Department. 
  • Identifies fleet requirements, leasing of vehicles and arranges any routine or otherwise necessary maintenance according to need.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no initial supervisory responsibility. 

Requirements

 QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must be neat and organized.
  • Must live/relocate in Northern Florida.
  • Possesses a valid US Driver’s License and a clean driving record. The candidate should also have the capability of obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and any accompanying required documentation.
  • Possesses exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and within a team setting. 
  • Possesses aptitude to work with and honor funeral directors and their profession (including sight of corpses).
  • Has ability to retain and recall product knowledge.
  • Can complete forklift training and certification.
  • Possesses ability to adhere to strict confidentiality. 
  • Able to operate and learn necessary computer functions and programs, including scanning and faxing of documents, ERP and CRM programs, Microsoft Office, Mapline and others as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality and is knowing of personal space and boundaries.
  • Understands the need to be flexible with time and availability for correspondence with customers (even on evenings, weekends and holidays) due to the possibility of last minute plan changes or occasional emergency deliveries.
  • Must be dedicated to punctuality and reliability.
  • Must have knowledge of State highways and GPS routing tools.
  • Must accept responsibility for on-time deliveries and double check ratcheting straps after each delivery.
  • Possesses above-average Mathematical skills.
  • Able to travel for training and/or support other locations during times of vacation/stress (initially training no more than one month in multiple locations including but not limited to: Shelby Township, Michigan, Richmond, Indiana and Lakeland, Florida. 
  • Must possess excellent reasoning ability. He/she must be able to analyze problems, identifies alternative solutions, select and implement the best alternative and communicate the logic behind the decision to others, both within and outside of the organization.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED equivalence is required. Additional formal education and previous funeral industry, office, management, sales, logistics, transportation, marketing and manufacturing experience are preferred. Previous forklift experience is also a plus.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Has ability to read, comprehend, speak and write in the English language. 
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills including phone communication and active listening.

  • Possesses strong reasoning skills, including the ability to analyze problems and identify, implement and rationalize solutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Must be able to lift 75 lbs., and otherwise maneuver product weighing up to 200 lbs. using proper provided equipment (forklift, pallet jack, casket jockey) to successfully manage inventory and load trucks (upon completion of forklift training and certification program).
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle with capability of obtaining a CDL (and accompanying legal operating requirements) if not already within possession.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. These include but are not limited to: 

  • The cab of commercial vehicle and various loading docks throughout the territory.
  • Funeral homes and crematories. 
  • Traveling within a 150-mile radius of the base of operations.
  • Typical daily route 10-12 stops maximum with several hours of driving in between.
