Position Summary:

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician will support SEIA’s Research Department and data engineers in procuring, analyzing, and publishing geospatial data relevant to the solar energy and energy storage industries in the United States. The GIS Technician will be responsible for making maps, transforming raw geographic data into usable maps and documents, and building/maintaining customized GIS databases/applications. They will read and interpret maps, manipulate and understand digital land data, and manage GIS data.

Core Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create, maintain, and update GIS databases, maps, and systems to support company objectives.
  • Collect, analyze, and integrate spatial data from various sources and determine its accuracy and quality.
  • Perform analysis to identify spatial relationships and gather data to build charts and maps.
  • Read, interpret, and create maps tailored to specific projects or tasks.
  • Support the maintenance, development, and operation of GIS tools.
  • Maintain, correct, and update data related to geographical areas.
  • Collaborate with team members and other departments to ensure GIS data is integrated effectively.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of GIS data resources.
  • Assist with data gathering, compilation, mapping, and data analysis.
  • Stay updated with the latest GIS technologies and methodologies to enhance the company’s GIS capabilities.
Requirements:

Professional Experience, Education & Other Qualifications:

  • Hands on experience with desktop GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.)
  • Knowledge of GIS data types, GPS collection, relational database systems, mapmaking
  • Ability to perform spatial analysis techniques such as buffering, clipping, and exploring the relationships between map features.
  • Understanding of map projections and cartographic principles
  • Knowledge related to the energy sector
  • Experience working with public datasets
  • Web GIS knowledge and experience (OpenStreetMap, etc)
  • Able to accomplish GIS projects and tasks without needing direction
  • GIS certification
  • Web coding knowledge and experience helpful (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to work within office software
  • BS in GIS, Earth Science, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Environmental Studies, Geography…or related field


Working Conditions

  • Work is in an office environment or in a remote office environment that is suitably equipped with internet and telephone access
  • SEIA employees in the Washington, D.C. region follow a hybrid remote and in-person office model. Employees work 3 days a week in an office environment and as needed when there are special events or meetings but will otherwise be remote
  • Travel 10-15% based on locality


Compensation Range

$65,000-$70,000 annually, based on experience and excellent benefits package
