A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NUTRITIONIST / DIETITIAN

As a flexible part-time Nutritionist / Dietitian in human services, you play an essential role in working with our healthcare personnel to ensure our resident's nutritional needs are being met. You oversee the screening of new clients in our residential programs for nutritional risks and make recommendations to our admissions committee about our ability to meet our client's nutritional health needs. When performing nutritional assessments, you evaluate our client's height, weight, BMI, age, energy, protein, and fluid needs.

In collaboration with our nursing staff, you also provide a diagnosis of current nutrition problems, as well as make recommendations and conduct follow-ups for interventions and goals. You correspond with case managers, clinicians, nurses, physicians, educators, therapists, and direct staff to develop and implement appropriate nutrition interventions. Each month, you oversee anthropometric measurements of residents as well as monitor and report changes to the nurse and interdisciplinary team. Periodically, you also observe meal preparation and services to residents with disabilities to ensure menus and health codes are maintained. You communicate with the appropriate staff to make sure self-feeding and other nutrition-related tasks are met.

Additionally, you present regular in-services and training to residential, food service, and educational staff on policies of good nutrition and overall wellness. You develop and implement group nutrition education for residents as well as participate in and design curriculum for our new employee orientation. Working alongside kitchen staff, you assist with creating nutritionally balanced meals that meet the needs of residents. You also work hard to gain expertise in PKU, diabetes, or other metabolic disorders that apply to your clients.

You design and coordinate health promotion initiatives for residents and staff as well as create weekly specified meal plans for residents with special dietary needs or medical conditions. The health and welfare of our residents with disabilities are always at the forefront of your mind no matter what you do. You're passionate about your work in nutrition and dietetics, and it brings you great fulfillment to know your position impacts our human services nonprofit in a such big way!
