Position Purpose

The Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness position exists to serve the campus community by providing vision, leadership, and direction for a competitive intercollegiate athletics program that advances the university's mission and vision. The position directly reports to the president and is responsible for the operation and accountability of the athletics department, which includes leadership, management, supervision, fundraising, and university-wide involvement by promoting the student-athlete experience, advocating for students' academic success, enhancing competitive opportunities for student-athletes and coaches, and hiring and retaining quality staff and coaches. The director is also charged with providing recreational and educational wellness programming to foster a well-rounded student experience.

Key Result areas and functions

* Direct all aspects of the intercollegiate athletics department, stewarding and shepherding the growth of sixteen varsity programs and their student-athletes in mind, body, and spirit:

* Hire and evaluate coaching, program, and administrative staff;

* Develop and implement initiatives that cultivate healthy, dynamic athletic programs that represent the institution well and compete for UMAC, NCAA DIII and NCCAA championships;

* Provide leadership in directing all elements of financial and budgetary affairs for the athletics departments;

* Inform university policy and practice relative to athletics, and represent the institution relative to those policies and practices with external stakeholders and groups including the UMAC, NCAA, NCCAA, etc.;

* Plan, resource, and execute athletic-related events and competitions;

* Recognize and comply with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the university and its employees, as well as the rules of the NCAA, NCCAA, and the UMAC, and those of any other conferences to which the NCU is or may become affiliated;

* Be a visible and engaging leader for the program;

* Partner with institutional stakeholders to plan, execute, and evaluate recruitment and retention strategies;

* Direct fundraising, alumni, and business engagement activities to support departmental and institutional goals; and

* Organize and participate in committees, events, and activities that enhance the reputation and understanding of athletics, the campus, and the university.

* Direct the campus recreation and wellness department, including the following:

* Hire, support, and evaluate program and administrative staff who facilitate competitive intramural activities, clubs, fitness/wellness, and drop-in recreational programming;

* Oversee the development, operations, maintenance, and planning of institutional recreational facilities;

* Provide leadership over budget and facilities needs and requirements relative to the department; and

* Engage with campus stakeholders to leverage recreational programming in support of institutional health and wellness goals.

Job qualifications

Minimum education and experience

* Bachelor's degree and at least six years of demonstrated experience (or advanced degree and at least four years of experience) of progressively responsible related work in intercollegiate athletics administration or related experience that includes a minimum of three years leading and/or supervising the work of others.

* Previous experience and demonstrated effectiveness as a program leader, including, but not limited to fiscal and personnel management, athletic and academic success, establishing positive working relationships, and promoting and building diverse and inclusive teams (as defined by the university) is essential for success in this role.

* Possess a demonstrated ability to execute visionary strategic and operational leadership, creative and conceptual thinking, and effective resources management.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

* A committed, Christian faith as demonstrated by the integration of their faith in their daily lives.

* Possess a strong appreciation of and commitment to the mission and values of Christ-centered, residential, private liberal arts college and its intercollegiate athletics programs.

* Ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse set of constituencies including students, student-athletes, faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and community members.

* Be self-directed, highly motivated and goal oriented, work with integrity, and bring skills and abilities needed to advance both athletics and the university including the capacity to be a visible and engaging leader and advocate for the program and the university.

* Commitment to building and maintaining strong connections between athletics and the academic enterprise to ensure success of NCU student athletes and achieve both athletic and institutional goals.

* Understanding of and commitment to comply with NCAA, NCCAA and UMAC rules and regulations.

* Commitment to both gender and racial equity.

* Understand and contribute to the student-athlete recruitment process and student-athlete wellbeing.

* Knowledge of athletics, physical education, and recreation with insights as they relate to present trends and society.
