This position oversees the Political Action Departments PEOPLE (fundraising) program. PEOPLE is AFSCMEs Political Action Committee, funded by voluntary contributions from AFSCME members and their families. The Assistant Director is responsible for development, implementation and management of programs, strategies, and processes to grow member participation in PEOPLE. Works directly with AFSCME staff, affiliate leaders, affiliate staff and members on a regular basis in an effort to promote participation in the fundraising program. This position also helps oversee AFSCMEs federal endorsement process and includes extensive work directly with candidates, campaigns, and affiliates regarding the AFSCME endorsement process and PAC contribution strategy. The Assistant Director is responsible for preparing materials, briefings and campaign plans that support the Program; represents AFSCME at conferences, trainings, local meetings for the purpose of promoting the program; and develops the fundraising efforts at AFSCMEs convention every two years. Coordinates data systems to report contribution processing, compliance reporting and other tracking.

Duties:

  • Works with affiliates and other departments to develop and implement PEOPLE fundraising plans, including goals, timelines, tracking and accountability measures.
  • Oversees the development and promulgation of PEOPLE training programs and promotional materials.
  • Develops and implements strategies for online and other solicitation methods as part of a holistic national plan.
  • Supervises the Unions PEOPLE booth at national convention, which includes staff management, material and clothing procurement, tracking financial transactions, developing incentive and participatory events and more.
  • Works with other departments and affiliates to develop AFSCMEs candidate questionnaire, conduct candidate interviews, track races, make endorsement recommendations, make contribution recommendations, coordinate with campaigns and committees, and represent AFSCME at events.
  • Prepares briefings and backup documents as required by Department Director and other union leaders. Works across departments to track, monitor and assess internal database and contributor information, process incoming contributions and make recommendations on standard operating procedures for contributions and tracking.
  • Manages staff assigned to the program. Identifies and coordinates development of PEOPLE merchandise and clothing for sale and incentive programs including management of the online PEOPLE store.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience and or a combination of education and experience to provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Skills Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of the political and legislative process to include federal and state election and campaign finance laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of unions and their political action and fundraising activities.
  • Ability to develop and execute a strategic plan.
  • Experience with EveryAction or other donor management systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lead and supervise personnel towards position goals and to work within a deadline environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure within tight deadlines.

  • Travel and extended work hours are required.
