Be a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team in our Type I and Type III classrooms.

Laurel Hall is a non-public Type I school designed to provide education services to students with special needs, including, but not limited to, emotional disabilities, and Autism that require sophisticated, highly structured and individualized special education services and any needed psychiatric support services. Our program includes focusing on social skill development and communication for autism spectrum students. We also provide a Type III classroom for residents in our residential program at Brook Lane.

The Instructional Assistant will function in both settings assisting with student care, instruction, behavioral support and filling in as substitute. All staff are trained in therapeutic intervention procedures in order to de-escalate any student crises that arise during the school day. Therapeutic intervention may involve verbal de-escalation and/or physical restraint depending on the severity of the situation. Ability to safety pass the CPI course is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervises students during academic periods and non-academic periods (dining, off-grounds, etc.)
• Supports students with in class instruction
• Prepares of assignments and materials before each class session
• Assists teacher to maintain classroom order, appearance and organization
• Help students with activities of daily living as needed (physical care, eating, etc.)
• Performs crisis intervention with students exhibiting behavior problems
• Provides one on one time with students as needed
• Transport students as needed
• Provides support and data collection for academic coverage within multiple modalities
• Communicates accurate and relevant information to other members of the education staff

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education or equivalent field required
• Previous experience with school aged children and autism population preferred
• Physical ability to perform behavior management duties which could be standing up or down on the floor
• Ability to pass therapeutic restraints training course
• Ability to deal with student aggression and intense behaviors
