Cogentrix Energy Power Management is Hiring an Operations and Maintenance Manager Near Lakewood, NJ

UNITED STATES • FIELD AREA (corporate or plant) • FULL-TIME

Position Summary

The person holding this position is responsible for the planning and supervision of the day-to-day plant operations and maintenance activities of 3 facilities, under the direction of the General Manager. Two of the facilities are in Lakewood NJ and the other in Rising Sun Maryland. He or she will be based out of Lakewood NJ with occasional travel to Maryland. He or she must be multi-skilled in at least two of the following power plant disciplines: operations, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, or instrumentation and controls. Monitors plant performance and can identify mechanical, electrical, and I&C corrective action when appropriate. As such, would have the ability to operate the control board, perform complex mechanical maintenance or electrical duties, and/or perform as an instrumentation and controls technician. He or she assists in conducting performance tests on existing or new plant equipment. Trains and guides less experienced operations and maintenance personnel.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Oversees and provides guidance on all facility operations, including startup and shutdown of main plant components, auxiliaries, and system components.

2. Assist with the development of and ensure that all site safety requirements and procedures are properly implemented, consistently observed and corrective actions are initiated when applicable.

3. Assist with establishing and continually improving comprehensive and efficient programs in operations, maintenance, chemistry, environmental control, and safety.

4. Oversee the collection and analysis of plant operational and performance data. Maintain logs and records through a standardized process.

5. Responsible for maintaining plant process chemistry within designated guidelines by performing routine chemical testing, evaluation and implementing corrective actions.

6. Performs electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, maintenance tasks and outage planning.

7. Oversees the operation of plant instrumentation and control devices for the purpose of recognizing any abnormal plant conditions and taking appropriate corrective actions.

8. Responsible for developing standard procedures for operations and maintenance.

9. Performs other duties necessary to fulfill plant requirements.

10. Assigns, monitors, and assures high work quality of operations technicians.

11. Assist with the preparation, justification and control of annual operations and maintenance budgets.

12. Assist the General Manager with recruiting, awarding positions along with employee development, qualification, goals program.

13. Interacts with various equipment and service vendors.

14. Maximizes plant efficiency and shareholder value without compromising personnel and equipment safety, environmental compliance, or the long-term commercial viability of the facility.

15. Oversees employees on a rotating shift schedule, scheduled and unscheduled overtime and performs.

16. Establishes and maintains high personnel and professional standards of safety and environmental conscientiousness and compliance.

Required Job-Related Qualifications:

1. Ability to read and write effectively in English and to do basic mathematics; high school diploma preferred

2. Five (5) years of power plant experience in operations and/or maintenance, including experience as a Control Room Operator (CRO); CRO qualification preferred.

3. Knowledge of power plant mechanical and electrical equipment, (including motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc.) and associated maintenance functions.

4. Knowledge of power plant safety policies and procedures, especially in the areas of high-energy systems, chemical handling, heavy equipment, rotating machinery, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, and first aid

5. Basic knowledge of or ability to understand fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, chemistry, thermal dynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow.

6. Thorough understanding of the water treatment process obtained through both “hands-on” experience and formal training, including passing all in-house training and testing.

7. Working knowledge of the impact of water treatment requirements on overall plant operations.

8. Broad knowledge of chemistry and power plant chemical applications.

9. Knowledge of and experience in at least four (4) of the following skill areas: pipefitting, welding, machining, rigging, rotating machine repair, fabrication, machine alignment, piping schematics, mechanical drawings, electrical theory, electrical safety, vibration analysis, electrical test equipment, basic electrical trouble-shooting, and high- and low-voltage systems, equipment and components

10. Demonstrated ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards and other devices associated with power plants.

11. Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists and slings.

12. Ability to comprehend and apply technical information, including mechanical and electrical drawings (such as blueprints, P&IDs, single-line diagrams, and schematics), to problem-solving situations and trouble-shooting.

13. Ability to locate, trouble-shoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and/or maintain, install, modify and trouble-shoot plant electrical systems and equipment (even while on-line) without “tripping” equipment (with supervision, if necessary).

14. Ability to communicate and coordinate work on technical subjects with others across job families and with outside vendors.

15. Ability to operate and maintain various analytical and test equipment.

16. Outstanding skill in leadership and interpersonal relationships.

17. Experience with reciprocating engines is preferred.

18. Ability to work with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and other computer-based programs.

Physical Requirements:

1. Ability to work at heights and on ladders.

2. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in high noise and/or hot and cold temperature extremes.

3. Ability to work in proximity to high voltage and/or rapidly rotating equipment and in cramped and/or confined conditions requiring overall flexibility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, with occasional heavy lifting.

4. Ability to work occasionally with toxic chemicals including, but not limited to, solvents, acids, and caustics.

5. Ability to perform physical work in atmospheric conditions where fumes, dust and gases are present.

6. Ability to work rotating shifts or extended hours, holidays or when applicable due to the needs of the business. Ability to be “on call” for changing plant conditions with occasional overnight travel.

7. Sufficient physical strength to operate manual valves and sufficient physical endurance for repetitive motions, such as manual valve operation and barrel moving.

Education/Experience Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Five (5) years of power plant experience in operations and/or maintenance, including experience as a Control Room Operator (CRO); CRO qualification preferred.
