POSITION SUMMARY

BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN RISK : Yes
Perform any of a variety of clinic nursing activities involving, but not limited to reproductive health services, immunizations, basic disease investigation, comprehensive client care and follow-up, and related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide immunizations to clients of all ages in accordance to ACIP guidelines in a safe, efficient, courteous, and timely manner.
  • Assess immunization history via the Michigan Care Improvement.
  • Registry (MCIR) and administer age appropriate immunizations according to standing orders.
  • Provide safe and accurate lead screens to children at risk for lead poisoning and appropriate follow-up as needed.
  • Provide history taking, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and risk reduction education for STI's according to medical standing orders.
  • Safely obtain specimens including, but not limited to, phlebotomy and ensure specimens are processed and sent to appropriate laboratory.
  • Assist in conducting passive and active surveillance of communicable diseases in St. Clair County.
  • Provide education to schools, health care providers, and the general public related to public health including, but not limited to, immunizations and communicable diseases.
  • Administer and read TB skin tests, providing follow-up for clients with positive results.
  • Order and maintain supplies for clinic as necessary.
  • Good working knowledge of community resources to facilitate and coordinate services.
  • Help secure needed medical and financial assistance. Provide intra-agency referrals and inter-agency referrals as needed.
  • Prepare detailed records and reports of work performed.
  • Mandatory participation in orientation and training for basic public health emergency preparedness and response concepts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Work is performed under the direction of the applicable division head with direct supervision by a Public Health Nursing Supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May be expected to direct activities of support personnel.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, EDUCATION:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current registration as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan
  • Minimum of three (3) years of current nursing experience.
  • Bachelor degree of Nursing preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of the basic sciences and the theory, technique and practice of nursing.
  • Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.
  • Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly; communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required. Proficiency may be tested.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Prior to starting employment, the candidate must complete a satisfactory background check.   • Must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license throughout employment in this position.

  • Required to report to duty when called upon in the event of a Public Health situation and/or emergency regardless of declaration.

  • Position may require occasional travel for training, various County departments and community events.
