Job Summary

The Nurse provides nursing services to promote the physical health and well-being of Dallas College students.Health services are provided within an integrated care model within the Dallas College Student Care Network. Nurses work as part of a dynamic team of mental health and medical care professionals (including social workers, LPCs, psychologists). Nurses are essential for the daily clinical operations of the Dallas College Health Centers to ensure high-quality health services to students. Health Services includes a range of services including vaccinations, first aid, health counseling, and outreach.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the purpose of community colleges and the vision of Dallas College.

  • Experience leading health center operations.

  • Skills in technological support and delivery of student programs and services; knowledge and skill in the use of integrated software systems; and proficiency in the use of Microsoft application software.

  • Employ and deploy data-informed and results oriented initiatives.

  • An understanding of contemporary issues in higher education is required through professional development activities.

  • Experience working with student support programs (counseling, health & wellness programs, etc.).

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students, supervision, or other employees.

  • Experience in strategic planning, assessment of program(s) effectiveness, and development of guidelines to enhance student success units within the institution and with accrediting bodies.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, complex ideas, and information to a variety of stakeholders/constituents within the Dallas College community and health care, social service network related to student basic mental health, physical, spiritual and social needs.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Excellent time management, and organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Responds appropriately to issues in a dynamic, rapidly changing educational/economic environment.

Physical Requirements

Normal physical job functions performed within a standard office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with physical challenges to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited nursing program

  • Three (3) years of related nursing experience. College health nursing, school nursing, community health nursing preferred.

  • Current and valid Texas driver's license required.

  • Current Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, current CPR certification. Official licenses are required.

  • Ability to work flexible hours especially during heavy registration peak times including nights and weekends.

  • Required to work at various Dallas College Health Center locations and Health Services outreach events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of a Health Center, providing services across multiple campuses.

  • Implementation and leverage technology platforms such as electronic health records to support the student care network.

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform physical assessments of patients to determine acuity level.

  • Ensures staff and programs work collaboratively with other Dallas College areas, faculty, and staff.

  • Reads, interprets, and implements the State of Texas THECB statement regarding Bacterial Meningitis.

  • Promote a safe environment for students to discuss their feelings and then, ultimately, help them develop strategies to deal with the events in their life.

  • To provide a prevention-oriented health care model for basic, find cost-effective community health care resources and updates a referral list of health care professionals, clinics, and resources in our area, including specialty services such as checking temperature, blood pressure and breathing, administering injections, cleaning and dressing wounds etc.

  • Administer and read TB skin tests.

  • Administer vaccinations (i.e. Meningitis).

  • Stays informed of new trends and procedures that would enhance college health care delivery.

  • To promote the health maintenance and well-being of students through health counseling, screenings, and health awareness activities; to include not only direct patient care but also teaching, counseling, and serving as a campus consultant on health-related matters.

  • To provide leadership, strategic visioning, establishing strategic goals and objectives aligned with the College's mission and goals for the Student Health Center.

  • To oversee federal and state law compliance for all educational and medical entities: FERPA, HIPPA, TITLE IX, CLERY ACT., etc.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Health Center and provides direction and supervision to students and staff across multiple campuses. Responsible for administrative and management functions direction to academic departments and staff members, as a consultant, regarding health/medical issues or concerns.

  • To serve as the key point staff member/expert for any medical emergency on campus.

  • Performs other job duties as required.
