Creative Keyboardist is Hiring a Piano Teacher (Part-Time) Near Oakland, CA

Creative Keyboardist is seeking a part-time piano teacher to teach adults. Most students are beginning and “returner” adults, with some intermediate adults. You’ll gradually build a roster of enthusiastic adult students, many of whom can attend earlier in the day when kids can’t. You may set your own teaching schedule. A page for your city with your bio will be added to the Creative Keyboardist website.

This position involves in-person teaching at YOUR studio in Oakland or Berkeley. Your studio could be at your home or in a commercial space that you rent. Either way, you MUST have your own studio and it MUST be within Oakland or Berkeley city limits.

Some virtual/online teaching may also be involved.

This position is ideal for an established, working teacher who would like to gradually add more adult students to their schedule.

You should have a professional instrument(s), preferably both an acoustic and digital piano. You should also have appropriate technology for teaching virtually.

You may set your own teaching schedule, but it should include at least one weekday evening and/or several hours on weekends.

The ideal teacher will have a bachelor's degree in music or equivalent professional experience, demonstrable teaching experience with positive reviews/testimonials/references, broad knowledge and skill playing and teaching both classical and popular keyboard music, and music theory proficiency.

This is an independent contractor position. We’ll agree on your teaching rate and related terms, and enter into a written independent contractor agreement.

Professional written communication skills including use of salutations, correct grammar, capitalization and punctuation are an important aspect of your application, messages you send, etc.

ALL questions must be thoroughly answered for your application to be considered. (Write “N/A” if a question doesn’t apply.)

Application Question(s):

  • If you play more than one instrument, what is your primary instrument?
  • Do you currently teach piano? If so, how long have you taught? Briefly describe your current students’ ages and skill levels, your pedagogical focus as a teacher, etc. In particular, discuss your experience teaching adults.
  • What keyboard instruments do you own? Acoustic piano? Digital piano? Both?
  • Do you prefer teaching certain age groups, i.e. kids, teens, or adults? Please explain.
  • Briefly describe your piano-related musical training and education. Include your undergraduate (and graduate, if relevant) major(s)/minor(s), whether in music or not.
  • If you have a teaching website and/or teaching bio, please add the URLs. If you don’t, how do you currently acquire new students?
  • Do you have preferences for adult student skill level (beginner, intermediate, advanced)? If yes, please describe.
  • Do you know how to analyze a relatively simple chord progression in a piano score using jazz chord symbols (e.g. C7/E) and/or figured bass symbols (e.g. V65)?
  • Please answer ALL of the following: (a) can you improvise? (b) have you arranged and notated any piano music? (c) have you composed and notated any original piano music or songs? Please provide relevant details.
  • How might your students describe your positive qualities as a teacher?
  • Considering your other work commitments, how many teaching hours per week would you like? (Between 7-15 teaching hours/week is preferred, but more or fewer will be considered.)
  • What days and times are you generally available to teach? For example: Mondays 4p-9p, Tuesdays 3p-6p” etc.
  • Would you be willing to use our custom curriculum (accessible online), especially with adult beginners and “returners”? (You may evaluate the curriculum before agreeing to teach.)
  • What is your preferred HOURLY teaching rate? State a SPECIFIC dollar amount NOT a range. (A suggested rate will fall between $60-$90; applicants with lower rates – all other things being equal – will be considered first.)
