PART-TIME - Child Care Lead for Elementary Program
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services seeks Child Care Leads for the Elementary Before and After School Program (grades Kindergarten through 5) who are energetic, positive, and excellent role models for participants, staff, and volunteers. You will oversee frontline operations such as planning, preparing, and leading age and developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 5 through 11 in accordance with the Colorado Department of Human Services licensing regulations and Recreation Services Program Standards.
This is a .75 full-time (grant-funded) position with benefits that will follow the Harrison School District #2 calendar. Normal work scheduled will be: after school hours Monday through Friday 2:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; before school hours Monday 6:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and Tuesday through Friday 6:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Typically, this position will require 30 hours each week. Additional hours may be scheduled as needs arise. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function in the performance of this job.

This is a three-year grant-funded position with the possibility of an extension. Multiple positions are available across six Before & After School sites. 

 Essential Job Functions
- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Primary oversight of daily program functions
  • Monitor and supervise staff in the active leadership of children in program
  • Oversee planning, preparation, and implementation of age-appropriate activities for youth ages 5-12 modeling both Recreation Services Program Standards and the State of Colorado Childcare Licensing Guidelines
  • Positively interact with children; actively participate in all program areas
  • Demonstrate support for administrative decisions
  • Develop and lead constructive and productive staff meetings and trainings
  • Serve as a lead worker performing essentially the same work as those directed, and includes overseeing work quality, training, instruction, and scheduling work
  • Observe and record children's behavior following Behavior Management Guidelines
  • Maintain open communication with Recreation Assistant and coworkers regarding program and participants
  • Comply with facility setup/takedown procedures returning program space as it was received
  • Help implement activities for special events
  • Develop and maintain good public relations with parents/caregivers and staff
  • Provide regular and consistent information to parents/caregivers and children
  • Ensure proper compliance with pertinent City and divisional policies and procedures as well as State Licensing Guidelines
  • Report accidents and behavioral concerns to the supervising Recreation Assistant
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of accident, program, and administrative reports
  • Actively participate in leadership meetings and staff trainings
  • Attend all trainings and complete State Licensing certifications as required
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
  • Previous experience in a State Licensed School-Age program
  • Knowledge of child developmental stages and positive behavior management skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships 
  • Ability to prioritize, think, and work independently; problem solve; and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have three years (5,460 hours) of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience working with school-age children
  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges

One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

  • Be bilingual in Spanish
  • Possess, or obtain within 30 days of hire, First Aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certifications 
The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
This position requires the ability to stand, sit, stoop, walk, climb, bend, and lift up to 20-25 pounds occasionally. The ability to actively participate with youth during program activities, swimming, and field trips is also required.
