City of Gastonia is Hiring a Property and Evidence Office Assistant Near Gastonia, NC


The City of Gastonia Police Department is seeking a diligent Property and Evidence Office Assistant to join our team. As a vital member of our organization, the ideal candidate is responsible for assisting the Property and Evidence Custodian by providing intermediate-level administration services and exceptional customer service. The work is performed under the guidance and limited supervision of the Property and Evidence Custodian. 
The following job functions are typical for a position of this nature. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function satisfactorily. Other job functions and duties may be required as assigned.
  • Receptionist task such as answering telephones, taking messages and request; greeting the public
  • General secretarial duties such as operating office equipment (station printer/fax, word processing and mathematical calculations via computer terminal; processing and filing paperwork; maintain digital and written records; preforming methodical filing
  • Collecting and interpreting data for reports for projects; Organizing and preparing information for dissemination through various mediums (paper, newsletter, email, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.) 
  • Open, forward, and process mailings and packages in accordance with established SOP
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritize workload efficiently
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with law enforcement personnel, legal professionals, and members of the community.
  • Proficiency in using office software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and email for data entry, record-keeping, and report generation
  • Capacity to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, and implement solutions in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles and practices to maintain accurate records of property and evidence, conduct audits, and reconcile discrepancies.
  • Knowledge of safety measures to prevent and mitigate exposure of trace and/or transference of chemical compounds, odors, body fluids, and other potentially hazardous airborne and tactile elements that may be present in evidence obtained during investigations
  • Awareness of safety protocols and security measures to protect the physical integrity and confidentiality of property and evidence
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices related to maintaining the chain of custody for evidence, including documentation and tracking procedures.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities, procedures, and circumstances in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Capacity to provide courteous and professional assistance to law enforcement personnel, legal professionals, and members of the public
  • Capacity to analyze situations, anticipate potential problems, and make sound decisions based on available information and established protocols.
 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or the equivalence there of with 3 years of experience in an office environment 
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid driver’s license
  • DCI Certification from the State of North Carolina within 120 days of hire
  • Minimum typing skill of 45 words per minute with high accuracy 
  • Position requires passing Intermediate level PC applications skill test prior to hiring 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. The physical activity of this position includes:
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet, legs and/or hands and arms. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceed those required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and the maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to come to rest on the knee or knees.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending the leg and spine.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Pulling: Using the upper extremities to exert force to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas using the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal spoken word levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.
  •  Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
 
 
2. The physical requirements of this position are:
  • Office Environment Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Office work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are categorized as office environments if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other Office Environment work criteria are met. objects.
 
3. The visual acuity requirements, including color, depth perception, and field of vision:
