Position Summary
This is a paid, part-time, scheduled and on-call position that responds to fire, rescue, medical, and other emergency incidents, participates in training and maintenance activities, and provides fire safety education training and community relations to the public.
Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs firefighting activities in accordance with NFPA standards including but not limited to laying hose, performing fire suppression, containment, ventilation, extinguishment tasks, driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment.
  • Performs emergency medical services and rescue activities including administering first aid and CPR, operating EMS equipment such as monitor/defibrillator, portable suction units, etc., performing extrication, and providing other assistance as required.
  • Responds to and assists in emergency situations, including but not limited to, rescuing persons, properties, and premises; evacuating, securing and coordinating emergency scenes; operating equipment in an efficient and safe manner; and assisting other emergency agencies in the performance of their duties, which may include emergency management functions, mitigation, and recovery efforts.
  • May be assigned or responsible for administrative responsibilities, to include completion of incident response reports.
  • Actively participates in required drills, duty crew shifts, department meetings, committees community events, and other required activities.
  • Must meet availability standards as set by the department for training, on-call response and duty crew shift participation.
  • Public Education - conducts public education on fire prevention, emergency medical techniques, fire suppression activities, personnel safety, and other related areas as assigned.
  • May be responsible for developing and conducting fire and EMS training.
  • May take a leadership role during calls for service providing direction to less experienced firefighting personnel, as assigned by a supervisor or in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as required, assigned, or apparent.
  • Responds to major alarms.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must complete, within two years of hiring, general fire department orientation and competency evaluations, and minimum certification equal to the State of Minnesota's equivalent for:
  • Firefighter I
  • Firefighter II
  • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO)
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVOC)
  • Emergency Medical Responder or Emergency Medical Technician
  • Must be able to perform all physical duties normally expected of a firefighter, including meeting medical requirements as established by NFPA Standard 1582 for medical and physical fitness standards. Must comply with OSHA respirator requirements on an annual basis
  • Must be able to meet minimum requirements set by the department for response, training and other activities as assigned
  • Must live within 8 minutes of a Brooklyn Center Fire Station, as determined by the City of Brooklyn Center
  • At the time of hire, must live at the same address used on the initial application
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with Minnesota driving privileges
  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation
  • Must successfully complete a psychological and medical evaluation
  • Computer skills - Microsoft programs and computer functions as well as related equipment

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to learn, understand, and carry out rules, regulations, principles, practices, and methods of comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, and other emergency services.
  • Ability to read and understand written materials such as operating manuals, textbooks, and safety instructions.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations necessary for response to fire, rescue, medical emergency, and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and use logic to solve problems.
  • Ability to perform all physical duties normally expected of a firefighter, including meeting medical requirements as established by NFPA Standard 1582 for medical and physical fitness standards. Must comply with OSHA respirator requirements on an annual basis.
  • Must be able to accept authority and work as a team member under stress caused by emergencies, danger or criticism, and must be able to work effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to perform the tasks outlined in NFPA 1001 (Firefighter professional qualifications).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, using plain English, and proper spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a positive, constructive image as a Brooklyn Center Firefighter maintaining effective working relationships with all co-workers, city staff, the public, and other agency personnel.
  • Ability to function in a calm and professional manner during stressful emergency situations. Make reasonable decisions regarding the safety of team members and his/her own self.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and/or make sound independent judgments in stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to regularly be available and work non-scheduled hours due to emergency calls.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and while using radios and telephones.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and work in an environment consisting of a variety of duties occurring simultaneously.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to frequently sit; talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to occasionally climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, occasionally while wearing PPE and SCBA.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment which weighs approximately 50 pounds while performing firefighting tasks; perform physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment with resistance to exhalation and a flow rate specified by current SCBA manufacture;
  • Must be willing to perform complex tasks during life-threatening emergencies; work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
Work Environment
  • Work may be performed in an office, vehicles and in outdoor settings during both day and night.
  • Work may be performed in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Must be able to spend excessive time outside exposed to the elements; tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing firefighting duties; perform physically demanding work in hot (up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit), humid (up to 100%) atmospheres while wearing equipment which significantly impairs body-cooling mechanisms; experience frequent transition from hot to cold and from humid to dry atmospheres.
  • Must be able to work in wet, icy, muddy areas, and uneven terrain, perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as on rooftops or from ladders.
  • Must be willing to work in areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries is possible.
  • Must be willing to face exposure to smoke, noise and/or vibration exceeding 80 decibels (constant or intermittent).
  • Must be willing to face exposure to infectious biological agents such as Hepatitis B or HIV.
  • Must be able to operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.
Attendance
Firefighters are required to comply with minimum response percentage of 25% of all calls. Additionally firefighters must attend 60% of all trainings offered within a 3 month period.

Supervision of Others
This position is typically not responsible for any oversight of other staff; however, when directed, assigned or when appropriate, is responsible for supervision of staff.
