TITLE

Public Scholarship Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

The Public Scholarship Specialist at TWU's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is responsible for promoting thought leadership within the TWU community. TWU's current QEP “Amplify Your Impact” focuses on graduate student thought leadership for the purpose of advancing community wellbeing through public-facing communication skill building. Collaborating both internally and externally, the manager will work towards enhancing the visibility of TWU community members by soliciting mainstream media publicity and supporting faculty and students in securing public outlets for their work. The Public Scholarship Manager will work closely with faculty and graduate students, guiding them to successful placements in print, broadcast, and digital media outlets. In addition, the role includes raising the profiles of faculty and students by advising on media appearances and online presence, including social media output. This is a full-time professional staff position with a three-year contract with possibility of renewal.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to:Director, Quality Enhancement Plan

Supervises:May supervise Clerical Support Staff, Student Assistants, and Interns

ESSENTIAL DUTIES –May include, but not limited to the following:

  • Develops and implements media strategies to enhance TWU's presence.
  • Coordinates and implements strategies for effective public exposure of TWU's scholarly work.
  • Creates and maintains a robust YouTube channel and podcast to highlight TWU's thought leadership.
  • Tracks and reports on the public impact of TWU's public scholarship initiatives.
  • Collaborates and maintains relationships with internal and external partners to enhance TWU's thought leadership.
  • Collaborates with academic departments, programs, and centers to advocate for public scholarship.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with media entities, publishing outlets, and potential community partners.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to faculty and students on effective public scholarship.
  • Assists in developing and implementing workshops to enhance digital and media literacy.
  • Stays informed about best practices and innovative approaches in public scholarship and social media.
  • Collaborates with the QEP team to plan and execute initiatives that advance public scholarship across disciplines/departments.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • May assist with fundraising activities. 
  • Performs other duties as requested. 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in relevant area required. Master’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a relevant area.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position. This position is eligible for alternative work arrangements, including flexible schedules and/or telecommuting.

All employees share the responsibility of maintaining information security and privacy requirements within the university by adhering to Federal and State regulations, and TWU Policies & Procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of media strategies and publicity.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in marketing and communications. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners. 
  • Excellent relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to advocate for faculty and student work in various media outlets.
  • Familiarity with digital media platforms, including YouTube and podcasts.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. 
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

SAFETY

TWU promotes a safe working environment. Employees are responsible for completing assigned tasks safely and efficiently, and supervisors are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe work environment. Employees must report any unsafe work conditions or practices, as well as any near-miss incidents, to their supervisor and Risk Management. Supervisors and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to the Office of Human Resources and Risk Management within 24 hours of the incident.
