Hillsdale College is Hiring a Remote Assistant Director of School Leader Development

Overview

Through its work in K-12 Education, Hillsdale College seeks to restore excellence to American K-12 education, public and private. This is a new position, created to accommodate the increased depth and scope of the K-12 Education Office’s work with affiliated schools. Hillsdale College’s K-12 Education Office advises classical private and public charter schools across the country, focusing on five areas: board governance, school leadership, curriculum, school culture, and classical pedagogy.

Through regular conferences and publications, it provides guidance to the leaders of its affiliated schools, focusing on the academic and operational aspects of running a K-12 school.

The person filling this position will report to the Director of School Leader Support to join in that work, maintaining close connections with the leaders of Hillsdale-affiliated schools and bringing the teachings of Hillsdale College to a growing network of classical educators.

Responsibilities

  • Work hand in hand with the Director of School Leader Support and the rest of the school support team to provide comprehensive guidance to the schools affiliated with Hillsdale College, keeping in mind Hillsdale College’s Best Practices for K-12 schools and its entire K-12 program
  • With the Director of School Leader Support, cultivate resources to support school leaders of member, affiliate member, and candidate schools
  • With the Director of School Leader Support and others in the K-12 Education Office, the Spencer Graduate School of Education, and other departments at the College, cultivate the school leader pipeline, including: recruitment, marketing, programming, coaching, and professional development
  • In working with leaders, the Assistant Director of School Leader Development will coach and guide school leaders, leadership teams, and support governing boards according to the K-12 Best Practices and other frameworks developed in conjunction with the school support team
  • Serve as a representative of Hillsdale College at education conferences and other events
  • Give presentations on the work of the K-12 Education Office at Hillsdale College events in town and across the country
  • Participate in the filming of videos for the K-12 Education Office’s online library of resources for schools
  • Visit Hillsdale’s affiliated K-12 schools on occasion to observe and give presentations to faculty and parents
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    • A Master’s degree is required, and one year in a relevant field of study is preferred
    • Five to ten years or more of experience in K-12 administration and leadership and time in classical schools is preferred
    • Past or current service in a charter or private school, ideally as Headmaster or Principal
    • Knowledge of classical education and Hillsdale’s approach to K-12 schooling and a deep appreciation of the role a leader’s decisions have on the culture and functioning of a school

    Personal Characteristics

The K-12 Education Office frequently interacts with College staff, visitors, and donors. A neat appearance and a pleasant demeanor are essential. Staff members must represent the College well and act in support of its mission.

    Code of Commitment

Serve as an excellent representative of Hillsdale College to promote the liberal arts, the College’s original Articles of Association, and operating principles stated in the Staff Code of Commitment. The Mission Statement should be considered in all aspects of the position. The teaching of Christian faith shall remain a conspicuous aim of the College.
