Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization committed to protecting all children from gun violence in schools, homes, and communities. The SHP Action Fund champions a holistic policy platform that promotes gun safety, youth mental health, and violence prevention education. The organization works at the state and federal level to pass nonpartisan legislation through inclusive partnerships, diverse grassroots education, and community mobilization. It is part of Sandy Hook Promise, founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Vice President, Advocacy and Engagement will lead our organization's grassroots organizing efforts and develop a national organizing model to expand our volunteer base, boost engagement, and promote diversity among our supporters. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in grassroots organizing, advocacy, and leadership, with a passion for advancing our mission of gun violence prevention. The Vice President serves as a member of Sandy Hook Promise’s Senior Leadership Team. The Vice President can be located anywhere in the United States and reports to the Chief Advocacy Officer.

The starting salary for this full-time role is $147,000 . We offer a competitive benefits package including a full suite of health and wellness benefits and paid time off.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement a national, nonpartisan, grassroots organizing model unique to SHP’s brand and mission
  • Grow and diversify the number of volunteer supporters, with an emphasis on the moderate middle, and increase supporter engagement to advance our mission
  • Lead and manage a team of grassroots organizers and advocacy professionals, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities
  • Seek, implement, and evaluate evidence-based strategies to deepen volunteer engagement in person and virtually
  • Build and maintain relationships with key nonpartisan national and state partners, including unlikely allies, to ensure SHP is represented in relevant coalitions and positioned as a leader in violence prevention and student safety
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as Marketing, Communications, and Policy, to ensure alignment and integration of grassroots organizing efforts
  • Working with SHP’s Marketing Department, develop strategies to grow and diversify our national base, with an emphasis on the moderate middle, and create a pipeline for recruitment of more and diversified volunteer supporters nationally and in key states
  • Manage a team of 6 , including a combination of staff, contractors, and consultants
  • Build and manage department budget, contributing to organization reports and proposals

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • 10 years of grassroots organizing and building organizing strategies at the local, state, and/or national level
  • Experience managing and mentoring high-performing and fast-paced teams
  • Proven track record in designing and implementing successful national organizing models. Non-electoral organizing experience a plus
  • Strong understanding of advocacy tactics, political processes, and policy issues
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills
  • Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization and its volunteer base
  • Commitment to Sandy Hook Promise’s mission and goals

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position has supervisory duties

TRAVEL & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Travel 20-30%, as needed for management of staff and supporter engagement
