Position Details

Position Summary:

The Library Security Supervisor for the Indianapolis Public Library will support the goal of excellent customer service by performing and supervising safety and security responsibilities. The supervisor will be responsible for building security, including secure points of entry, exits, interior areas, parking garage, and the exterior of the library. The supervisor will establish goals and priorities of the department, and plan, schedule, coordinate, and assign work. The supervisor will respond to calls for emergencies and attempt to prevent theft, property destruction or vandalism, and in addition will assist with investigations related to theft, injury, or accident and comply with all investigating state or federal agencies. Other responsibilities include ensuring patron and staff compliance with general safety/security rules and regulations and adherence to the Behavioral Policy set forth by IndyPL and to manage and report accidents and incidents that occur on library property. This position functions as part of a department or branch public services team to provide high quality and equitable internal and external customer service.

A successful candidate will…

  • Excellent customer services skills
  • Three years of experience working in security preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalency. Post-secondary education preferred
  • Basic computer skills
  • Certified and able to maintain certifications in AED, CPR, First Aid, Naloxone, fire pull stations, and fire extinguishers
  • Able to cope with daily job-related stress and challenges.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

What does the job look like?

    • Knowledge of office practices and procedures, including computer skills such as email, internet, and software.
    • Knowledge of life/safety systems. (AED, CPR, First Aid, Naloxone, fire pull stations, fire extinguishers) and willing to be certified and maintain certifications.
    • Skill in exercising quick, mature, and informed judgment in reacting effectively to emergency situations.
    • Skill in securing buildings with several points of entry.
    • Skill in de-escalation, while ensuring patron compliance with security rules and regulations.
    • Skill in documenting incidents, with attention to detail.
    • Ability to work in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds, age groups, and abilities.
    • Ability to meet demands from various points of view and varying leadership expectations.
    • Ability to be flexible in scheduling to meet the demands of the various events held at the Library.
    • Ability to demonstrate flexibility, positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and cultural sensitivity in working with patrons, staff members and the community.
    • Ability to solve problems creatively and negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
    • High level ability to prioritize tasks and delegate appropriately as needed.
    • High level ability to communicate effectively to address needs and concerns of both staff and patrons.
    • Recognition of problem priority levels and demonstrating good decision-making skill to address issues in real time.
    • Enforce the library’s Behavior Policy and determine with Manager or Person-In-Charge when behavior in the library is inappropriate.
    • Able to cope with daily job-related stress and challenges
