Your contributions to the organization and drive for success will be valued and celebrated.Performs protective service work enforcing laws, patrolling assigned area, investigating criminal activity, serving civil papers, ensuring safety of the public, testifying in court, maintaining records and files, preparing reports and performs related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Patrol Sergeant or Civil Process Sergeant. 
Cadet will perform administrative tasks at the Sheriff’s Office as well as participate in, and remain in good standing at, and pass all required testing during BLET.
  • Patrols community to engender their trust and support;
  • Checks security of buildings and residences;
  • Investigates traffic accidents; uses measurement devices, eye-witness accounts, and determines violations;
  • Assists motorists in the exchange of information; provides information to insurance companies regarding accidents; verifies vehicle registrations and ensures compliance with inspections laws;
  • Conducts pre-tour of duty inspections of vehicle and equipment to ensure readiness with fuel, tire air pressure, and warning sirens and lights, and all other support equipment is operational;
  • Enforces speed limits by monitoring heavy speeding areas for visibility;
  • Observes and follows people violating traffic laws, vehicle registrations and inspections laws, and other traffic offenses;
  • Conducts criminal investigations by gathering information, processing crime scenes, and interviewing witnesses;
  • Recommends solutions to resolve conflicts;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be at least twenty (20) years of age at the completion of training. Must attend classes regularly and maintain appropriate passing requirements of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).The Cadet, through training and administrative work experience, is expected to develop the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • General knowledge of modern law enforcement methods, practices, and procedures;
  • General knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of important buildings;
  • General knowledge of departmental standard operating policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances;
  • Knowledge of practices, materials, techniques, and equipment pertinent to job assignment;
  • Knowledge of criminal human behavior when confronted with difficult situations;
  • Knowledge of effective communication practices including focused listening;
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports;
  • Skill in the use of firearms and other authorized law enforcement equipment;
  • Ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public under stressful situations;
  • Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances;
  • Ability to work varied shifts and assignments including nights, weekends, and holidays;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public;
  • Ability to develop and maintain a positive public image, exercise judgment in all situations, and demonstrate a positive attitude.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking, hearing, use of hands and fingers, handling or feeling, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting, smelling, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements and requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally and to convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Employee must be able to demonstrate continued physical fitness to withstand the rigors of the work and potential physical confrontation with assailants and/or foot chases for apprehensions.
Special Requirements
  • Must pass a criminal record check, driving history, medical/psychological exam, and a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must obtain Basic Law Enforcement Training certification and the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and
  • Standards certification within one year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
