Chatham County is Hiring an Utility Maintenance Specialist Near Pittsboro, NC

Performs technical work assisting in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery in the water treatment plant and off-site structures. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Water Plant Supervisor/ORC.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs parts or equipment due to failure; 
  • Maintains and repairs chemical feed pumps, sample pumps, lagoon pumps, high-service pumps, pump control valves, pressure-reducing valves, injector valves, chemical feed systems, air compressor systems, blower systems, vacuum systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems;
  • Troubleshoots all miscellaneous issues at the water and waste water plants including painting, pressure washing, making repairs, pricing repairs or scheduling repairs with contractors;
  • Performs inspections on pump stations and vaults;
  • Performs weekly preventative maintenance on pumps, pump control valves, pressure-reducing valves, altitude valves, and adjusting tank pressure sensors;
  • Supplies chemicals to chemical booster stations, remote injection sites and waste water plant;
  • Reviews project plans;
  • Meets with contractors for quotes;
  • Maintains spare parts inventory; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED supplemented by coursework in mechanical and plumbing trades, treatment plant operations or distribution and/or collection system maintenance experience including pump repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and hydraulic components of pumping stations;
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work;
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, parts, and methods associated with diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining equipment;
  • General knowledge of water treatment plant principles, maintenance requirements, and operating practices;
  • General knowledge of electrical wiring and parts and ability to diagnose and replace some parts;
  • Some knowledge of the use of computers in maintenance, repair, and record-keeping and parts inventory maintenance as well as proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite;
  • Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade such as drills, multi-meters, amp probes, hand tools, tractors, backhoes, and welding equipment;
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning of pumps and motors by observation, sound, and chart readings, and to take proper remedial action;
  • Ability to work well in high stress situations and in a variety of environmental conditions;
  • Ability to read and follow schematic and mechanical drawings, blueprints, electrical diagrams, and written and oral instructions including the ability to follow operational flowcharts;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, and the public;
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and prepare reports;
  • Ability to read meters and charts accurately
