Contractor Sales Support Position

About Brookdale Lumber:

Brookdale Lumber is a small, family-owned lumberyard and hardware store specializing in contractor sales and do-it-yourself projects. We have been part of the Tacoma community since 1943 and distinguish ourselves from other building material distributors by offering unbeatable customer service, quality products and the ability to source specialty materials in a timely manner.

Position Purpose:

The Contractor Sales Support position is responsible for assisting the Contractor Sales Position during overlapping shifts and filling the Contractor Sales role in their absence. This position will assist with servicing our high-volume contractor accounts, as well as helping the retail sales team with any special customer projects that go above and beyond the knowledge of our retail sales staff: such as blueprint reading and providing material take-offs. This position is expected to assist in all aspects of customer service under the guidance of the Contractor Sales Position. This may include pricing, selling/returning, ordering, and scheduling delivery/pickup for all transactions in an effort to maintain and grow our customer base. Other duties may involve resolving customer issues, documenting all transactions, and maintaining outstanding communication with customers and employees alike. This position involves high levels of customer interaction, building material knowledge, critical thinking, attention to detail and organization along with basic math and computer skills.

Position Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Establish and grow business relationships with both new and existing customers through excellent customer service, quality goods and competitive pricing.

§ Frequently communicating with customers regarding any project/material needs, pricing materials competitively to generate profit as well as secure customer business, provide blueprint reading and material take-off services when needed, visiting job sites, resolving customer issues in a timely and professional manner, etc.

2. Help manage all aspects of customer transactions in a timely and efficient manner.

§ Pricing materials competitively, using our POS to work up estimates and sell/return products, placing and tracking customer special order materials, filling out order paperwork, scheduling customer deliveries and will-calls, finding new vendors for specific products requested by customers as needed, timing incoming material appropriately for customer project timeline, etc.

3. Provide blueprint reading and material take-off services to applicable customers.

§ : Answering clarifying questions regarding material needs based off project blueprints, providing accurate material list from official blueprints for project at hand, offering advice concerning discrepancies in blueprints versus practical application, etc.

4. Communicating effectively with both upper management and other employees to maintain a unified and informed work environment.

§ : Communicating with delivery driver about upcoming deliveries, inform with the yard about new special order materials for a customer, suggest new stocking items/services based on customer feedback and industry expertise, informing buying position about transactions/orders affecting stocking inventory quantities, etc.

5. Think critically and implement logical solutions for day-to-day customer service issues as needed.

§ Delays in material delivery timeline, incorrect material or quantity, damaged materials, general miscommunications regarding customer needs, pricing issues, special order return requests, etc.

6. Strive to learn all aspects of the Contractor Sales Position.

§ : Blueprint reading, material take-offs, product knowledge, negotiation tactics, specific problem-solving strategies, general salesmanship, etc.

7. Maintain expertise concerning current building industry practices and materials to better serve our customer base.

§ Major building code changes, new innovative products, best building practices, etc.

8. Document all aspects of customer transactions for sales analysis purposes.

§ : Make sure all customers have an account for easy document recall, use only your log-in credentials for any sale/return/PO’s for accurate tracking, fill out PO’s properly to accurately reflect material cost and overall profit, file relevant physical documents in an organized manner, etc.

9. Assist with any special tasks handed down from upper management as needed.

Positions Direct Supervisor: Contractor Sales Position

Position Schedule:

Monday - Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm

Required Knowledge:

§ Fluent in English

§ General lumber and building material knowledge

§ Basic computer skills

§ Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Required Skills:

§ Customer service experience (1 years)

§ Blueprint reading and material take-off experience (preferred)

§ Leadership experience (preferred)

§ Retail sales experience (preferred)

§ Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

§ Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities

§ Motivated

§ Detail oriented

Working Conditions:

§ This position spends roughly half the time inside (desk, meetings etc.) and half the time outside (jobsites, walking the lumberyard, etc.)

§ This position operates a company truck on a regular basis and is required to have a valid WA State Driver’s License.

§ This position is required to occasionally lift 50lbs by hand.

Compensation & Benefits:

§ Offering 40hrs per week at $22/hour

§ Healthcare benefits package (medical, life, dental & vision) after 60-90 day probationary period.
