Northern Engineering is Hiring a Mechanical Designer Near Superior, WI

Northern Engineering has been serving the mechanical power transmission rebuilding and machine shop needs of the Great Lakes vessel operators and other large material handling customers for over 100 years, our business is growing. We have an opening on our team for a Machinist. Our staff must be available to work when needed, 24/7 to meet the needs of our customers. Our customers count on us to minimize their down-time for critical systems and keep coming back because of the high level of service they receive from us. We offer a combination of in-shop and in-place repair options.
Job Summary
The Mechanical Designer is responsible for overseeing and coordinating purchasing activities, drafting technical drawings, and managing inventory levels to support the efficient operation of the organization. This role involves liaising with suppliers, creating technical drawings, and monitoring inventory levels to ensure adequate stock availability while minimizing excess inventory.
Responsibilities
  • Identify and source materials, equipment, and supplies required for production or projects.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and contracts with suppliers to secure favorable terms and pricing in collaboration with operations management.
  • Place orders with approved suppliers and follow up to ensure timely delivery.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchases, pricing, and delivery schedules.
  • Create technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints based on specifications provided by engineers, project/production managers and shop floor.
  • Utilize drafting software to develop detailed drawings, ensuring accuracy and adherence to industry standards.
  • Collaborate with production and project teams to refine drawings and incorporate feedback as needed.
  • Review and revise drawings based on feedback and project requirements.
  • Monitor inventory levels and track usage to ensure optimal stock levels and prevent shortages or overstock situations.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to forecast inventory needs based on production schedules and project requirements.
  • Implement inventory control procedures to minimize shrinkage, damages, and obsolescence.
  • Conduct regular inventory audits and reconcile discrepancies as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities
  • Proficiency in drafting software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools.
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with suppliers.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in drafting technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of inventory management principles and practices.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering, or related Trade preferred.
  • Proven experience in purchasing, drafting, or inventory management roles, preferably in a manufacturing or construction environment.
Physical requirements
Position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Able to work in a manufacturing environment which includes moderate noise exposure, occasionally climbing up steep stairs/steps, walking for moderate periods of time over even and uneven terrain, reaching forward, overhead, and to the sides, etc. Requires listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Proficiency in operating hand and power tools used in drafting and inventory management tasks. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50lbs.
