JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Director of Food and Nutrition Services manages all aspects of the dietary department including but not limited to food safety, staff safety and supervision, cost management, and meeting the nutritional needs of all residents and others served by the department. This position ensures that food and nutrition services are provided in accordance with current federal, state and local standards alongside the mission, vision and values of the Little Sisters of the Poor. 
This position intentionally advances person-centered care and services irrespective of the presence of chronic and/or acute disease. These standards and guidelines are designed to attain the highest possible degree of quality of life and quality of care across multi-levels of aging services ranging from independent to skilled nursing. Sacred Heart Residence is licensed for 52 skilled nursing beds. 17 independent living apartments complete the senior living community.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  1. Active certification as Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM, CFPP) in compliance with the rules and regulations governing such certification.
  2. Minimum of 3 years full time non-commercial management work experience, preferably in senior living or long-term care. Prior work experience in a nonprofit employment, preferred.
  3. The ability/commitment to perform hands-on food preparation and/or departmental sanitation when and if needed to assure meal service.
  4. Must have the ability to creatively incorporate donations into a non-standardized menu plan, in a person-centered long-term care setting.
  5. Must oversee and direct storage and food safety standards.
  6. Must have a basic understanding of the special needs and problems affecting the elderly.
  7. Proficiency in computer usage and software applications, including but not limited to electronic medical records, staff scheduling programs and Microsoft Office.
  8. Ability to follow and give written and oral directions. Proficient in English.
  9. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  10. Strong management and leadership qualities and a desire for personal and professional growth.
  11. Communicate effectively by dealing tactfully and respectfully with all persons.
  12. Flexibility and a willingness to adapt to change in an ever-evolving environment.

Essential Functions: Manuals, Policies/Procedures and Mission Integration materials for the Little Sisters are located in the Dietary Department. A personal copy of current Employee Handbook, the Home’s Supplement and Benefit Guide are provided at time of hire.
  1. Collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary team including the Little Sister hospitallers to meet each Resident’s preferences, needs and desires as evidenced in a personalized “Plan of Care”.
  2. Play a role in maintaining a dynamic interdisciplinary approach, since all departments impact the security, safety and happiness of the residents (i.e. social and business services, nursing, spiritual / therapeutic recreation /activity programs, laundry, physical environment). 
  3. Schedule self and staff in a timely and accurate manner to meet needs and responsibilities of the department and the Home.
  4. Consult/visit Residents regularly to assure maximum nutritional care and services are provided.
  5. Assure that dietary documentation is current, informative, and in compliance with state, federal and local regulations.
  6. The Director of Food and Nutrition Services will conduct regular meetings with immediate supervisor, dietary staff, and Registered Dietitian and/or Consultant Dietitian.
  7. Serve as a member of committees within the Home including, Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI), Care Conferences, Safety, Emergency Preparedness, and Weight/Nutrition Risk.
  8. Participate in the annual review and updating of the facility-wide assessment and Home’s policies and procedures.
  9. Participate with Administration in planning the budget for the department. Strive for optimal use of supplies, equipment and personnel, maximizing use of donated services and resources, mindful of cost and purchasing approval limits.
  10. Knowledge of dietary department equipment and systems. Responsible for upkeep and maintenance with responsibility for staff operation and safety.
  11. Assure that substantial compliance with applicable federal, state and local standards and regulations for dietary services align with the Little Sisters of the Poor mission of respect for life and compassionate care to the elderly.
  12. Adhere to all administrative and dietary policies and procedures, including but not limited to HIPAA, safety / OSHA, infection prevention, residents’ rights, quality improvement and assurance indicators and those contained in the employee handbook. Exhibit respect for each individual by assuring confidentiality of personal information and events.
  13. Evaluate the work performance of all dietary staff. Assure performance appraisals are completed in a comprehensive and timely manner utilizing the conference as an opportunity to objectively review performance and set goals for the next year.
  14. Assure that the duties of all dietary personnel are clearly defined and consistent with their level of experience, education, and preparation.
  15. Participate in the planning, development, and presentation of orientation and education programs for dietary staff.
This position manages all personnel within the food and nutrition services department and is responsible for the performance management of the employees within the department. Hiring and termination decisions are made in collaboration with the Human Resources Manager, Mother Superior, and Administrator.
