Basic Job Purpose/Function

Klickitat County Civil Service will be testing for the positions of Lateral andEntry Level Deputy to work for the Klickitat County Sheriff. Exams will be held on June 1, 2024 in Goldendale WA. A $20 exam fee is required.
Provides emergency aid, security and protection to the citizens of the County by patrolling residential and commercial property, responding to requests for information and assistance, investigating criminal activity, serving of Civil papers and arrest warrants and enforcing laws and regulations.
Positions in the Deputy Sheriff classification are distinguished by the responsibility for providing emergency aid, security and protection to the citizens of the County.

Essential Job Duties

  • Patrols an assigned area to aid in preventing crime and to enforce state and local laws and regulations. Responds to a wide variety of calls and complaints including burglaries, homicides, accidents and other misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Observes, reports and acts on conditions conducive to crime and danger such as checking buildings for security, reporting hazards and damaged, missing or inoperative public facilities (i.e., street lights, traffic lights, traffic signs, guardrails, building access, etc.) and checking suspicious persons and vehicles.
  • Enforces traffic laws and motor vehicle operating regulations; operates radar unit; administers field sobriety and Breathalyzer tests; stops and issues warnings or violations to traffic violators; reports traffic hazards and directs traffic flow when necessary.
  • Responds to radio calls, determines nature of call and investigates the circumstances. Performs necessary action such as making arrests and transporting prisoners.
  • Provides assistance to the public in emergency and non-emergency situations. Administers first aid and requests medical service. Provides general information to the public on laws and ordinances. Assists individuals with complaints and inquiries or makes referrals to the appropriate authority or agency.
  • Prepares a variety of records and reports regarding property impounded, accidents, offenses and damage to property. Prepares and maintains activity logs and other related or similar types of information as a personal reference record of incidents and details.
  • Performs investigative assignments; assesses crime scene upon arrival; conducts interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects; photographs crime scene; collects and documents evidence; may search, arrest, read rights to and maintain control of suspects; conducts further investigation as instructed.
  • Participates in crime and drug prevention efforts by giving lectures and maintaining a high degree of visibility; prepares material for and presents police-related classes or informational sessions to other employees, school classes, scouts or other civic organizations to encourage public support for department programs.
  • Appears in court and testifies as necessary.
    • Performs service of civil papers and arrest warrants and assists the Chief Civil Deputy on certain writs.
    • Maintains proficiency in the use of police related equipment.
    • Under the direction of their supervisor, Deputy Sheriffs perform the following duties:
  • The preliminary investigation of criminal and other offenses.
  • The completion of investigations of certain categories of criminal and traffic matter.
  • The investigation of traffic accidents and other traffic matters.
  • The enforcement of criminal and traffic laws.
  • The apprehension and prosecution of violators.
  • The protection of life and property.
  • The preservation of public peace.
  • The proper collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Provision of selective enforcement on special crime and traffic problems.
  • Inspections of tavern and similar establishments.
  • Suppression of prostitution, illegal gambling, and the distribution of obscene matter.
  • The inspection of public and commercial amusement places.
  • The enforcement of narcotic and drug laws.
  • The recovery of stolen property.
  • Other duties as directed by the patrol supervisor.
Additional Job Duties:
  • May operate boat to patrol designated waterways to enforce applicable ordinances and to investigate accidents.
  • May assist in the training and/or work direction of new and less experienced officers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques used in law enforcement and crime prevention. Federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances as they pertain to law enforcement duties and responsibilities. County and departmental ordinances, rules, regulations and procedures. Safety standards and precautions related to the use of vehicles, firearms, and other police equipment. Ability to read, learn, interpret and properly apply laws applicable to area of assignment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other outside agencies and the general public. Perform duties and maintain personal conduct, attitude and appearance that conform to strict policies, procedures and discipline. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Use and care for firearms, motor vehicles and other police equipment. Independently analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action, particularly under psychologically and emotionally stressful conditions. Administer first aid. Write clear and accurate reports. Physically handle persons resisting arrest which may involve running, tackling, fist fights, and wrestling. Hold self in readiness at all times to answer calls, accept authority, obey orders of superiors and accept a strict personal and organizational code of conduct and ethics. Physically perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job.

As a condition of an employment, a candidate must have successful outcomes of a polygraph test, drug testing and completion of all examinations.

Valid Washington State Driver's License.

High School graduate or a certificate of equivalence.

Must be a citizen of the United States.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must be physically qualified for duties prescribed.

Must not have been convicted of a crime that is punishable by imprisonment in a state of federal prison or institution. Also must not have any arrest record for use of sale of drugs of any nature.

Shall possess good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.

Must satisfactorily complete 12 months probation.
