About This Role

Climate Power has an immediate opening for a Deputy Managing Director, Communications Engagement. The Deputy will work with the Managing Director of Communications to lead the organization’s strategic communications work to elevate key voices in the national narrative and manage Climate Power’s surrogates and storytelling operations. Climate Power’s surrogates program elevates diverse voices and experts to speak about the economic benefits of climate action and how climate action is a winning political issue. Climate Power’s storytelling program lifts the voices of real people to make climate action and clean energy investments personal. 

This position reports to the Managing Director, Communications.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Drive Ambitious Communications Strategies: Manage and execute communications strategies that elevate key voices to win the politics of climate nationally and in key states.
  • Team Management: Manage day-to-day operations of Climate Power’s surrogates and storytelling teams and overall operations, including supervision of team leads and consultants in their day-to-day work and in their long-term planning capacities.
  • Integrate surrogates and storytelling approach across Climate Power: Partner with peers across the organization to ensure a strategic communications lens and activation of key voices are integrated into all campaigns and efforts.
  • Develop and coordinate messaging: Collaborate with senior staff and campaigns team to develop messaging for Climate Power’s Advisory Board, surrogates, partners, and allies across the climate movement. 
  • Build a nimble communications operation: Oversee storytelling and surrogates programs by building and maintaining relationships and banks of targeted surrogates and storytellers; identifying consistent and innovative opportunities/placements for stories and related media that reach Climate Power's target audiences.
  • Engage and grow Climate Power’s surrogate network: Manage Climate Power’s Surrogates Director and support them to engage diverse voices of environmental leaders, state policymakers, youth activists, and people impacted by climate change for media opportunities and to tell the story of climate action. 
  • Engage and grow Climate Power’s storytelling network: Manage Climate Power’s Storytelling director and support them engage real people to tell their personal stories and make climate action and clean energy investments real. 
  • Evaluating results: Monitor and evaluate the impact of the communications team; establishing key metrics, analyzing results, and adjust strategies when necessary.
Essential Qualifications
  • 8 years of relevant communications experience including advocacy and political campaign experience. Climate experience is a plus. 
  • 5 years of people and/or project management experience; demonstrated success in leading departments and diverse teams and managing complex projects.
  • Deep political communications experience with a track record of success in the current media landscape. 
  • A strong instinct for powerful storytelling combined with strong editorial and ethical judgment. 
  • Experience managing rapid-response and enterprise communications strategies.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced campaign environment with unpredictable hours in high-pressure situations. 
  • Track record of effectively supervising a team to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong strategic communications and writing skills.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and will continue to interview until the position is filled (posting will remain up until position filled).

An ideal start date would be on or before June 25, 2024.

Our interview process generally involves 3 rounds of interviews, ranging in length from 30-60 minutes. All interviews will be conducted via Google Meets or Zoom. Successful candidates that move forward in the hiring process, may be invited to complete a skills assessment activity (for which they will receive compensation) and will undergo a vetting process, including reference and background check to ensure cultural and political alignment.
