The City of Coronado is accepting applications for 
Maintenance Worker II (Streets Division)
The Department of Public Services and Engineering is responsible for maintaining the City’s physical infrastructure and maintenance for the City’s beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems, and rights of way, while protecting the public’s health and safety. The department also provides engineering management, including planning, design, construction, and repair of the City’s buildings, parks, streets, and utility systems in addition to management of a wide range of services and programs.
Essential Functions:
  • Performs skilled work in the maintenance and/or construction of streets, alleys, sidewalks, and curbs & gutters.
  • Performs tasks with concrete, asphalt, and other roadway materials.
  • Operate heavy equipment and hand power tools.
  • Skilled in traffic control.
  • Assist with Special Events throughout the city.
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
  1. Receive, review and prioritize work orders; determine appropriate materials, equipment, supplies, methods and procedures needed to complete maintenance and repair projects; purchase equipment and materials as needed; as required, request additional staff to assist with project completion.
  2. Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, and hand and small power tools including loaders, backhoes, bobcats, root pruners, jack hammers, tractors, dump trucks, man lifts, tracker loader, roller riding mowers, small tractors, rototillers, stump cutters, sprayers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, chippers, shredders, push mowers, weedeaters, shovels, rakes and pick axes, or other specialized equipment as required; ensure all equipment operation is conducted in a safe manner.
  3. As assigned, provide direction to assigned staff; train assigned employees in their areas of work including maintenance, construction and repair methods, procedures and techniques; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  4. Set up traffic control and traffic devices.
  5. Utilize technology for monitoring work orders, Geographic Information System Mapping (GIS) input, and related tasks requiring the use of a computer, smartphone or tablet.
  6. Serve as the Lead Worker in the Lead Worker’s absence, including attending meetings and providing direction to crew members, communicating to Lead Workers, Supervisor or Director.
  7. Maintain records of time spent performing various maintenance functions; prepare reports as requested.
  8. Prepare or provide assistance in the preparation of a variety of records and reports including worksheets, maintenance requests work orders and related documents.
  9. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  10. Perform chemical application duties; store, mix and spray herbicides, fungicides and pesticides; ensure proper application of all materials; perform all duties in compliance with City and mandated health and safety rules and regulations.
  11. Inspect irrigation systems; monitor operations of the irrigation system to ensure adequate water distribution; make adjustments to sprinklers, pumps and other equipment as needed.
  12. Install, maintain and repair pipes, valves and timers; program controllers or timers; ensure systems operate efficiently and effectively.
  13. Provide direction on irrigation systems projects; identify areas affected by project; estimate time and materials required; requisition materials in compliance with City purchasing guidelines; read and interpret drawings and sketches; ensure safe working practices are adhered to.
  14. Perform maintenance and repairs on various facilities and buildings; perform light carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting work.
  15. Perform a variety of maintenance and repair activities for City parks and landscaped areas including mowing and edging grass, operating a weedeater, using leaf blowing equipment, cleaning restrooms, removing and trimming of shrubbery and raking leaves; pick up trash and debris.
  16. Repair playground equipment, park benches and tables, fountains and monuments; maintain recreational areas including tennis courts, basketball courts, backstops and boat docks.
  17. Evaluate and assess tidal action on beach areas; prepare and implement appropriate action to conserve beach areas.
  18. Perform maintenance and improvement projects at the beach; operate beach loader to rake and remove kelp; open storm drains; build and maintain sand berms and dunes; maintain exits and walkways.
  19. Perform maintenance and inspections of outfalls and beach access mats.
  20. Coordinate staffing for special events and oversee staffing for weekend coverage.
  21. Operate beach sanitizer to remove nails, glass, kelp and other debris from the beach; operate dump trucks to remove or haul away debris and materials.
  22. Maintain various beach facilities, restrooms, walkways, stairs and ramps; clean and re-stock restroom supplies; remove graffiti from beach facilities, benches and rocks; paint restrooms as needed; maintain beach fire rings and recreational areas.
  23. Operate and maintain irrigation systems including pump stations, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers and controllers; make rounds of the golf course to determine watering needs for the day and check for broken lines, heads and other parts.
  24. Perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance and upkeep of the golf course including mowing fairways, greens, tees and roughs, raking and edging traps, and weed abatement.
  25. Maintain tee boxes and greens; change cups and move tee markers; maintain and drain sand traps as needed; add sand.
  26. Maintain golf course turf; perform annual aeration and overseedings; apply appropriate chemicals and fertilizers in maintaining greens and turf.
  27. Remove and repair various electrical components; fabricate parts; press bearings.
  28. Conduct daily inspection on facilities; develop and schedule daily and weekly maintenance programs.
  29. Perform semi-skilled and skilled internal and external building trade duties including carpentry, plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical work.
  30. Perform minor structural, concrete and masonry repairs; maintain and repair woodwork.
  31. May participate in rotational shifts including weekends and Standby/On-Call shifts as re-quired. Employees assigned to Standby or On-Call duty must be available to respond and report to work within a reasonable amount of time, typically within forty-five (45) minutes of the receipt of the call.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
  • At least three (3) years of increasingly responsible maintenance experience in assigned program area.
Education/Training:
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Licenses and Certificates:
Employees assigned to Urban Forestry and Storm Water/Street Sweeping:
  • Possession of a valid Class B California Driver’s License with a safe driving record, or the ability to obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment is required.
  • Employees hired after September 30, 2022 shall be required to possess a Class A License or obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment.
Employees assigned to Divisions other than Urban Forestry and Storm Water/Street Sweeping:
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within twelve (12) months of appointment is highly desirable.
When Assigned to Golf or Parks:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Qualified Applicators Certificate issued through the California Department of Pesticide Regulations.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid applicator’s license.
Examination & Selection Process: 
Application Review Phase: 
A completed City of Coronado employment application and resume must be received by the Human Resources Division by 11:59 PM PST on June 2, 2024. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.
Examination Process: 
Applicants considered most qualified after the application review process will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview (100%). Additionally, applicants may be requested to undertake any or all of the following exercises – written assessment, practical and/or a presentation – as part of the evaluation process.
Final Interview: 
The top candidates will be invited to an interview with the acting Public Services Supervisor and other departmental personnel. Upon successful completion, the chosen candidate will be extended a promotional offer.
Establishment of Eligibility List: 
Candidates who successfully complete the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list for a period of at least six (6) months. Candidates must obtain a 70% or above in all components of the examination to pass. Applicants will be notified via email of their eligibility status.
