Job Responsibilities

  • Promptly and professionally assist the doctor in patient care.
  • Maintains a pleasant and positive attitude towards patients and co-workers.
  • Perform technical workups and patient interviews on EMR.
  • Able to update ocular history, medical history, medications, and eye drops esp. sig and location of drops and proper documentation of previous surgeries, very specific especially on plugs (ex Quintess 0.4 0.5, odyssey small med large etc. upper or lower lids).
  • Perform special testing as needed and transfer to EMR.
  • Maintain and clean all equipment being used. Report to supervisor if not in working condition.
  • Assist in minor surgery as needed.
  • Maintain open communications with tech supervisor, front office supervisor, administrator, doctors and technicians.
  • Cross-train in optical and front desk, all departments and provide coverage as needed.
  • Accurately complete E-rx
  • Successfully scribes for physician during exams on EMR.Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally, either verbally or in writing. 1.) Efficiently and accurately interview patients and documents histories.

Performance Standards * Consistently works up 3 patients per hour on average.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular meds.

  • Schirmer’s test
  • Understands characteristics of common anterior segment disorders and oculoplastic conditions.
  • Understands and communicates well to patients about cataract surgery and oculoplastic procedures.10.) Understands and communicates well to patients about LASIK parameters, restor, rezoom and crystalens.11.) Understands and follows procedures for surgical and procedural consents
  • Maintains certification.
  • Conforms to all BEA policies and procedures including punctuality, attendance and dress codes.

Physical Requirements * Successful completion of JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Certified Ophthalmic Technician certification, or actively seeking certification.

  • Previous experience or training in this or similar position.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Qualifications * Position requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Knowledge of medical instrumentation and proper care and usage needed. Ability to asses common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment required. Ability to communicate with patients, co-workers and supervisor is critical. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.
Work Qualities * Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to write neatly, legibly and with correct spelling.
  • Must be able to hold arms at shoulder height.
  • Must be able to communicate via phone.
  • Must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment.
