Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Controller, the Assistant Controller directly manages the GL accounting department staff and works closely with inter and intra-department team members, as well as third party accounting groups, to ensure complete and accurate accounting records are maintained, and that transactions and technical accounting matters are appropriately accounted for across the various entities representing the land investment and development segment of the broader Assemi Group collection of companies.
Responsibilities:
o Manage and perform first level review of the quarterly close process, including review of bank reconciliations, transactions (e.g. 1031 exchanges, buy/sale of land to related and unrelated parties, etc.) and individual company and consolidated financial statements and related reporting prepared for internal and external users.
o Provide leadership, training, and supervision to GL accounting department staff relative to their specific company assignments and projects, as well as to general accounting and overall professional acumen.
o Gain knowledge and expertise in our existing practices and procedures, and provide feedback, suggestions, and leadership toward process improvements to enhance efficiency and create bandwidth to be redeployed toward more value-added tasks within the department.
o Working closely with the Controller, continue to work toward full implementation and adoption of Blackline (IT solution) for quarter-end close and financial reporting/analysis capabilities.
o Working closely with the Controller, engage with, and provide insight/expertise relative to various AR, AP and payroll activities as appropriate.
o Working closely with the Controller, acts as the primary point of contact relative to external audits and reviews associated with individual companies as well as the combined financial statements.
o Leverage and engage internal tax and legal department teams to ensure appropriate consideration is applied to activities and transactions undertaken/contemplated.
o Preparation of proforma calculations and ad hoc reporting as needed.
Requirements
o Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of progressive experience; CPA strongly preferred.
o Strong grasp of GAAP, financial statements including cash flow and full-disclosure footnotes.
o Leadership experience – demonstrated success mentoring and developing small teams.
o Experience in accounting for multiple, related entities a plus.
o A successful candidate will be highly motivated, self-starter, driven, flexible and a genuine team player. Candidate must be able to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
Supervisory Responsibility
o This position manages staff and senior accountants in the department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within those positions.
Work Environment
o This position operates mainly within professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level in the work is low. The elements within the office are controlled by centralized heat and air conditioning.
