Job Title: Onboard Retail Sales

Reports To: Retail and Museum Manager

Type of position: Non-Exempt/Hourly 

Employee Classification: Seasonal 

Location: Bryson City, North Carolina 

Compensation: $13 - $15 plus Commissions

Job Summary: The Onboard Retail Sales interacts with all passengers by providing railroading knowledge, stories, regional history., and providing suggestive sales for Retail merchandise. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for entertaining, interacting, and providing suggestive sales with all passengers.
• Time management is necessary onboard the train to ensure that entertainment and sales are provided to all passengers. 
• Assist in passenger boarding and de-boarding at assigned boarding station(s).
• Responsible for meeting sales goals.
• Answer passenger questions and provide customer service as needed. 
• Complete required paperwork and recordkeeping in a timely manner. 
• Always maintain a professional appearance in GSMR issued uniform.
• Responsible for providing regional history, stories, and railroading knowledge.
• Be available for photo opportunities and passenger questions prior to train departure.
• Willing to continue education in the history of GSMR, locomotive power, regional railroading, and Appalachian history. 
• Comply with GSMR policies, procedures, and safety program including safety rules, operating rules, and participation in ongoing safety training/regular daily safety meetings. 
• Other duties assigned.

Work Environment:

• Work on and off the train directly with the public in varied terrain in all weather during both daylight and dark hours. 
• Must be able to walk and function on a moving train.
• Must be able to stand and walk up to 10 hours per day on and off a moving train.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and nights dictated by train schedule.

Requirements

Education, Skill, and Work Experience Requirements:

• Must be able to interact effectively with coworkers and customers, possessing good interpersonal skills.
• Familiar with history of Appalachia, GSMR, and regional railroading history, preferred.
• Preferred experience with customer service, guest service, and/or retail sales.
• Must have good equilibrium, not affected by motion and able to travel by train.
• Must be comfortable with public speaking and interacting with large groups of people without amplification. 
• Ability to push or pull a small cart or carry a stocked bag of merchandise throughout the moving train. 
• Ability to use technology including but not limited to Microsoft forms, scanning QR codes, POS system.
