Organizational Summary

Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) is a community-based nonprofit organization serving Pennsylvania and Delaware with over four decades of commitment to improving maternal and child health and early care and education. MCC’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of pregnant women and parenting families and enhance school readiness for children 0—3. We achieve this through direct service, advocacy, and research, in collaboration with individuals, families, providers, and communities. We envision a future where parents impacted by racial and social inequities can birth with dignity, parent with autonomy, and raise babies who are healthy, growing, and thriving.

Position Summary

The Childbirth & Lactation Specialist is responsible for providing culturally sensitive lactation and childbirth education services to pregnant and newly parenting families.

Essential Functions

Lactation Services:

  • Provides lactation education, encouragement, and support to people and families through virtual and phone consultations. Occasional in-person home visits as needed/appropriate.
  • Refers participants with more complex needs to an IBCLC/healthcare provider.
  • Documents and tracks all lactation consultations provided.
  • Plans and implements virtual/in-person lactation education workshops.
  • Co-facilitates Infant Feeding sessions for Perinatal Community Health Worker Trainings.

Childbirth Education:

  • Plans and implements virtual/in-person childbirth education classes in group-setting.
  • Provides individual childbirth education when necessary.

Additional Essential Tasks:

  • Collaborates with MCC’s programs and other community-based organizations to enroll clients into educational groups and individual infant feeding support.
  • Administers group participant surveys to measure impact of groups.
  • Assists with recruitment of program participants interested in group education.
  • Tracks group enrollment/attendance for all lactation/childbirth education group activities and communicates with enrolled participants.
  • Provides evidence-based educational literature, and prevention materials to clients as needed.
  • Attends community meetings, health fairs and represents MCC as requested by supervisor.
  • Attends training to advance evidence-based knowledge and expertise.
  • Meets with supervisor regularly to report on and discuss work.
  • Attends Department team meetings.
  • Routinely uses MCC client database and other computer systems including e-mail, Internet and word processing.
  • Ensures confidentiality of client records, sharing pertinent information only with the client’s approval.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to easily engage with people and feel confident to speak in public
  • Available to work non-traditional hours, including evenings
  • Ability to travel in and around the Greater Philadelphia region to provide services and community outreach.
  • Understanding of MCC’s mission, goals, and objectives and ability to work independently with a high level of energy and contribute as part of a larger team.
  • Knowledge of the concepts and practices associated with community health issues, particularly with pregnant women, prenatal care, parenting and other services for mothers, young children, and their families.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues facing the community served.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by compassionate, courteous, cordial, cooperative, and professional interaction with diverse groups of co-workers, community partners, clients, and members of the community.
  • Excellent computer skills (including Microsoft Office Suite, virtual meeting platforms, data entry and management, word processing, use of Internet)
  • Effective and accurate documentation of client consultation notes and client data according to established client management documentation procedures.
  • Ability to organize tasks in an efficient manner and follow-up and follow-through with strong attention to detail.

Experience, Education, and Licensure

Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Trained as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)
  • Certified Childbirth Educator or willingness to become a certified Childbirth Educator within the first 3 months of hire.
  • 2 years of continuous experience in providing lactation support services in a community-based setting required.
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred

  • AA/BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university in a related field of study
  • 1 years of continuous experience in group facilitation
  • Experience with community health issues
  • Experience working with maternal and child health issues
  • Bilingual language skills (Spanish/English)
