Whitaker Construction is Hiring a Safety Technician Near West Haven, UT

Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, has over 70 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 600 employees and nearly 70 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

Job Summary:

A Safety Technician plays a pivotal role in enhancing workplace safety by assessing, implementing, and enforcing safety standards. This role encompasses various responsibilities aimed at mitigating risks, enforcing safety standards and educating employees.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the company’s health and safety program and protocols.
  • Provide comprehensive training sessions to supervisors, managers, and employees on health and safety standards.
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA, federal, and state regulations.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify safety hazards.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with safety protocols among employees.
  • Analyze health and safety data to identify trends and areas of improvement.
  • Review and recommend changes to regular activities to enhance safety measures.
  • Investigate workplace accidents, prepare reports, and propose preventive measures.
  • Collaborate with various departments to address specific safety concerns based on the organization’s needs and industry regulations.
  • Demonstrates composure and effective decision-making in emergencies.
  • Passionate about promoting health and safety in the workplace.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in OSHA guidelines and other relevant safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with workplace tools, machinery, and equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to teach and enforce safety standards.
  • Competence in computer literacy and technology used in safety management.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups.
  • Previous experience in the health and safety field, preferably in a similar role.
  • Industry-specific knowledge and experience in writing safety policies.
  • Familiarity with safety management systems and data collection methods.
  • Associate degree in a related field; bachelor's degree preferred (e.g., business administration, health and safety management).
  • Completion of OSHA 510/500 series Construction Outreach Trainer preferred.
  • On-the-job training provided, focusing on organization-specific risk factors and safety procedures.
  • Bilingual preferred: English/Spanish, as this role involves frequent communication with Spanish speaking employees.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
  • Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
