Position Summary:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for the proper collection and handling of specimens as appropriate for the patient. The Phlebotomist is able to handle all areas of processes and procedures while maintaining a friendly and customer service approach with patients. Accurately and efficiently reports critical results and monitors incoming results from reference labs and logs/communicates results to providers via the EMR.

Independence Physician Management (IPM), a subsidiary of UHS, was formed in 2012 as the physician services unit of UHS. IPM develops and manages multi-specialty physician networks and urgent care clinics which align with UHS acute care facilities. It also provides select services for the Behavioral Health division of UHS. Through continuing growth, IPM operates in 12 markets across six states and the District of Columbia. Qualifications:
Education:
  • High School/GED Required
  • Valid Phlebotomy Certification preferred
  • Valid Phlebotomy license in state of practice, if required
Work experience:
  • Minimum 1 year experience in Phlebotomy and specimen collection
Knowledge:
  • Proficient in phlebotomy and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices
Skills:
  • Typing and basic computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Familiar with infection control policies and procedures.
Abilities:
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to operate clinic, hospital, and laboratory computer information systems efficiently and effectively.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices as appropriate for age of patient.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills of computer downtime procedures.
Equipment Operated:
  • Office equipment such as fax machine, copier, and telephone system
  • Lab equipment including centrifuges and hoods
Work environment:
  • Works in well-lighted, OSHA Standard environment
  • May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases
  • May be in contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary
Mental/Physical Requirements:
  • Able to stand, stoop, and bend for long periods of time.
  • Ability to assist patients ambulating to/from blood draw chair.
