The Studio Theatre is Hiring a Managing Director Near Washington, DC

Thank you for your interest in employment at Studio Theatre. Studio is a unique workplace, one that combines the ambitions of an accomplished arts organization with the agility of a midsized theatre, small enough to foster a real sense of community among our staff and dynamic enough to remain an important force in the theatre scene, both in DC and nationally. Every member of our staff contributes to this work, helping us meet our many deadlines and challenges with ingenuity and passion. Studio Theatre is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Responsibilities. These are the primary roles and responsibilities of the Managing Director:

  • Serve as a co-leader of the Studio Theatre with the Artistic Director, inspiring all its constituencies and ensuring organizational vision and goals are delivered, always keeping mission and values at the forefront.
  • Provide exceptional leadership and management of Studio’s teams, stewarding a positive, productive, and inclusive company culture.
  • Provide financial leadership to the organization, including oversight, short and long-range planning, problem-solving, and transparent communication about finances with the Board and all other stakeholders.
  • Forge a productive and deep partnership with the Artistic Director, based on clear areas of responsibility, transparent communication, and mutual trust.
  • Oversee overall theatre management and operations, including development, marketing, finance, HR, and general management.
  • Work with Studio leadership, Board and staff to build revenue. The Managing Director is one of Studio’s key fundraisers, oversees all sales, and creatively develops alternative revenue streams such as rentals and partnerships.
  • Oversee strategic planning with the Artistic Director, set strategic goals for the theatre, and manage the delivery of those goals.
  • Serve as one of the Studio Board’s primary collaborators, working with committees, leading Board-related initiatives, and reporting with transparency.
  • Serve as a Studio Theatre ambassador to all organizational constituencies including staff, artists, donors, audiences, partner organizations, media, local government and arts organizations, the D.C. Metro area community, and the national theatre field.

Ideally, the successful candidate for Studio Theatre Managing Director will possess many of these skills, experiences, and attributes:

  • Demonstrated management expertise and the ability to work as a collaborative, organized and decisive leader, building and sustaining a company culture based on transparency, honesty, accountability, and EDIA values.
  • Resourcefulness and demonstrated ability to build revenue, including through fundraising and thinking creatively about revenue sources and strategies.
  • Strong financial management skills, including the ability to manage an annual budgeting process and oversee higher level financial strategy around debt, capital projects, etc.
  • The ability to listen actively and build community, inspiring staff, artists and all Studio constituencies.
  • Exemplary, tested administrative skills, able to provide effective leadership and oversight to all administrative departments.
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to develop organizational vision.
  • Prior roles with organizations of significant (if not comparable) size or scope.
  • A deep love and knowledge of the arts. While experience in theatre production is highly beneficial, it is not a prerequisite and the Search Committee has expressed openness to candidates from outside the theatre field.

COMPENSATION, APPLICATION PROCEDURE, AND START DATE

The salary range for this position begins at $155,000. Benefits will include the following:

  • Health, dental, vision, life insurance, HSA/FSA
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays
  • 401k

The hiring decision will be made by a search committee of Studio Theatre Board and staff members. They hope to make a final decision in Q2 of 2024 with the new Managing Director onsite as soon thereafter as possible.
